Friends with Kids (2012, D. Westfeldt) - Westfeldt, Hamm, Scott, Wiig

Friends with Kids revolves around a pair of best friends in their 30s who observe the effect of having kids has taken on the couples they know. To avoid that toll, the best friends resolve to have a child and then date other people.
Adam Scott and Jennifer Westfeldt as Jason and Julie
Kristen Wiig and Jon Hamm as Missy and Ben
Maya Rudolph and Chris O'Dowd as Leslie and Alex
Edward Burns as Kurt
Megan Fox as Mary Jane

Wouldn't the easiest way to "avoid that toll" be to not have kids at all? Decent cast, but this sounds fucking stupid.

The premise of a destined-to-be-cancelled NBC sitcom with half the cast of Bridesmaids. I'm not too interested.

I caught this a few days ago. I didn't know anything going in except that Hamm was in it and it was written and directed by Westfeldt. I could watch Hamm open up a Sizzler and I enjoyed Kissing Jessica Stein, so why not?

The film is very predictable, but I enjoyed the ride as it plays like a late-90s/early-2000s independent film. You don't see too much of those now a days.

Pros:
  • Adam Scott needs more leading man roles.
  • Westfeldt's screenplay has very realistic (and funny) dialogue. It's great to see an R-rated comedy that doesn't use vulgarity just to shock and awe.
Cons:
  • Jon Hamm needed more screen time.
  • Chris O'Dowd's attempt at an American accent wanted me to punch a baby. The film takes place in New York, why not have him speak in his normal voice a la Bridesmaids?
  • The first two acts of the film are solid, but once the climax occurs, the film goes off the rails and becomes your normal romantic comedy. The film doesn't start off as your traditional romantic comedy, so why not end it that way rather than tying everything up with a bow?

Very enjoyable movie. Also has one of the best last lines in recent memory:

Spoiler:
"Fuck the shit out of me."

So this is NOT the third film in the the Friends With trilogy? (Money, Benefits)

I'm surprised they didn't get sued.

Saw this over the weekend with my girlfriend.

I enjoyed it (as well as the entire cast) and I'm glad I saw it. I agree with others that said it tied everything up too quick. It also was a little longer than it needed to be.

no, but it is part of the "accidental trilogy" of movies that Westfeldt put together, that just sort of came about re: relationships. Jon Hamm mentioned in an interview along with Kissing Jessica Stein and Ira & Abby, both very good and i look forward to seeing this.

The wife and I enjoyed it up until the last scene.
