^^^ whats with the Ricci obsession??? lol
saw Bernie tonight and loved it. Richard Linklater makes wonderful film with seemingly no effort. the opposite of Wes Anderson and more effective.

Re: Ishy's 2012 Movie Rankings
and hated what I got.
but objectively, the movie is nowhere near that bad. Plotholes and disappointments aside (flaws...) the movie is still a well crafted big summertime sci-fi flick. If it was a stand alone feature, its good, as the Ridley Scott prequel to Alien, its bad. does that make sense?
I wont put it in the "Can't recommend" category, because I know there are plently of level-headed people with decent taste in movies who would enjoy Prometheus. You have to be a huge geek like me to really hate it.
Same with Spider-man. Saw it last night and hated it. but its not a bad movie - not a great movie either, by any means. Most of the flaws that irk me are fanboy-type nitpicks. the other irks are poor writing (what else is new?) and a lack of vision from Marc Webb. Spidey is not the Marvel movie I want to see. Raimi #2 was the real deal....for now.
I also saw Katy Perry LOL.... it was decent. For a concert movie, the footage is as professional as it gets. the behind-the-scenes are fairly interesting, nothing groundbreaking. This is not Scorsese's The Last Waltz! but that wasnt what I was expecting. I dont mind Katy at all, out of all the bubble-gum pop crappy music out there...hers is the most tolerable, and even enjoyable. So I really didnt mind the movie... I am not going to be one of those haters who will give it a 0 just because...I walked out with a smile, so that is worth the rating I gave it.
I did not smile when walking out of The Amazing Spider-man...I shook my head in disappointment!

saw my first real awful movie of the year - Take This Waltz. don't understand the critical praise, the story was terribly ridiculous. I'd rather see Spirit of Vengeance again, and that was pretty bad LOL

though I won't list it as this year's masterpiece (a 2nd viewing will determine that for me), but I think I just saw what is so far, hands down, the best movie of this year - Killer Joe.
fkn so great!

Re: Ishy's 2012 Movie Rankings
Added a few movies to the list such as: The Master. another powerfully acted and masterfully crafted film from PTAnderson. While the story and themes are rather enigmatic (requiring multiple viewings), the acting and filmmaking are far-and-above at a higher quality that 99% of movies released.
I also upgraded Killer Joe. I was worried about "overrating" a movie that I thoroughly thoroughly enjoyed, and after digesting it for a bit, I've decided that it's as good or better than I originally rated.
So far, The Master and Killer Joe are the finest films of 2012 - from what I have viewed.
Additionally, i watched The Dictator on BR, and it was pretty horrible. 3-4 very funny moments, surrounded by many many unfunny moments and jokes that fall terribly flat. And I say this about a movie that has a scene set inside a vagina!
The premise about an African-Arab dictator is funny, but then gets obfuscated by leftist criticism of the United States.
the movie's politic satire is underpunctuated by the filmmaker's cowardly omission of certain elements that would seem intrinsic with the story - mostly radical Islam. and when The Dictator denies being an Arab, we can only but roll our eyes as the obvious coverup to favour political correctness. Cohen's act wears very thin, mostly due to a bad script that doesn't let him unload like he should. Borat remains, by far, his one great comedic movie. This one is a bit of a stinker, even if it does feature a scene that takes place inside a vagina.

Re: Ishy's 2012 Movie Rankings
saw Argo... giving it 3 out of 5.
could easily have been a 4 or more...if it wasn't for the massive flaw in the movie where Affleck and George Clooney try to re-write a page of history for the sake of partisan political propaganda.
for a movie that's supposed to be a bit of a history lesson...they sure were dishonest about the Shah and Khomeini, and Jimmy Carter. Clooney's political deceptions are rather disgusting.
As a director, Affleck crafted a pretty tight thriller. There are some horrible 70's hackney cliches that he indulges in (trying to ripoff PT Anderson and Oliver Stone for instance), but overall she shows a deft ability to direct the material.
Most of the script however is complete hogwash, and the coda with Jimmy Carter is outrageously an affront to honesty and those who suffer in Iran under the yolk of Islamic fascism.

Skyfall - so-so. Weak script. Great cinematography and performances from Berenice Marlohe and Bardem, but the story is dumb, and the 3rd act unsatisfying. QofS was far better.
Life of Pi 3D - simply amazing. Ang Lee created a visual masterpiece, that is also philsophical and moving. a tremendous 3D experience!

Ishy, looking forward to your best/worst of 2012 lists. Remember, only films released in 2012 in select cities where you wore a tutu are eligible!
