Wow, just looking at that poster makes me realize what a terrible lineup of movies are nominated for Best Picture this year. I've only seen about half of them, didn't really love any of those, and feel very little enthusiasm about seeing the others (though I will eventually). Is it just me?

Lowest Oscar ratings ever? I'd bet yes.

i think people will tune into to see Billy and his usual shenanigans, so no, highest in sometime i would imagine, but yes, weak best pic lineup for sure.

Just shows you what happens when the year doesn't have a Ron Howard picture to sweep the categories.

I'm saying that I believe Ron Howard's output seems to be what the Academy considers the pinnacle of cinematic achievement, so a bunch of other awkwardly-handled, mediocre dreck shouldn't be that surprising (though, perhaps putting it in words ruins my comment ;) ).

This may be the first year in awhile that I don't watch at all. Just can't get excited this year...

I liked a few of the Best Picture nominees, but none of them are all-time greats. A probable win for The Artist just means yet another Best Picture winner that nobody will even remember in 10 years. Looking at the Best Picture winners over the past 10 years, I'm not sure many, if any, would be a movie that you look at and think that, in the future, it will be looked back on as a classic.

If you go back to even just as recently as the '90s, there are a lot of winners that are still considered masterpieces by many (Braveheart, Titanic, Forrest Gump, Schindler's List, to name a few). I don't know if the quality has just dropped off so much over the past decade or the wrong films are being nominated and winning, but it's disappointing.

Same here. This is the first one I'll miss out of sheer lack of interest.

I wouldn't call a single one of those films you mentioned a classic. Of the 90's best picture winners, the only ones I'd call genuine classics are Unforgiven and The Silence of the Lambs. And meanwhile other actual 90's classics like Pulp Fiction, Seven, Goodfellas, Fargo, The Shawshank Redemption, Babe, The Lion King, and others aren't best picture winners. I'd say, in general, the Academy gets it wrong more than they get it right.

I have seen all of the best picture nominees except for Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close, Midnight in Paris, and The Tree of Life. I'm not sure which one I'm going for, but likely The Artist.

Not much blew me out of the water this year though.

Some are pretty funny. You can really see, though, what a class act Meryl Streep is; she seems genuinely happy when someone else wins and when she wins (as we saw with The Iron Lady at the Golden Globes), she appears surprised, humbled, and gracious.

Thats the only interesting thing about the Oscars so far the Sasha Baron Cohen getting booted thing. Why didn't they just hire Sasha Baron Cohen to host the Oscars? He's in a nominated movie, he'd prob pull a younger demographic than Billy Crystal, my 19 year old sister asked me what movies Billy Crystal is know for the other day. It amazes me she's never seen City Slickers.

Does anybody under the age of 30 know what a Billy Crystal is? Does anyone under the age of 70 actually tune in just to see him?
