Anybody seen Debt? That's one that I never seem to hear about, but thought it was pretty dang good.

Re: Jessica Chastain

I liked it. A little bit too quiet for me in a way. Just something was a wee bit off. But I liked it.

Did you feel that. Like something was off in a way. I liked the story but something about how it was done. I dunno. I can't really bitch about it but just something was off for me.

Are you talking about The Debt? If so, I agree.

I like Chastain fine, but I wouldn't go out of my way to see a movie just because she was in it.

Re: Jessica Chastain

I think she is fantastic in everything I've seen of hers. I think the high variation in the type of roles she's taking is what is also building up her reputation as well. And just to echo everybody else in this thread, she was really incredible in Take Shelter.

Doesn't hurt that she's a pretty redhead. To say that didn't help her get to where she is now on some level along with her talent would be dishonest...

True, the "ugly" girl in movies is usually an 8 or better.

Re: Jessica Chastain

She's a gorgeous woman with lots of acting ability, having both qualities is rare nowadays.

My reputation precedes me!

FWIW I don't think she's an awful actress, merely a competent one who became an "it" girl despite not having the acting chops to really impress over the long term. I don't begrudge her success, I just find it odd that people rave about her when I've yet to see anything from her that's truly impressive.

My opinion too. Not a hate Jessica Chastain thread or really even a dislike Jessic Chastain thread. I just thing she has been really average in everything I saw her in, yet she gets hyped so much for her acting.

I thought she was fantastic in Zero Dark Thirty. She made that movie work. Reminded me a little of Jodie Foster in Silence, which is high praise indeed. So much more convincing and effective than Jennifer Lawrence who won the Oscar instead.

Jessica Chastain is fantastic and I feel pity for those who can't appreciate her work.

Three are over 40, two will be 40 this year, and one is a year away. So much for women over 40 being "unemployable" in Hollywood, as some commentators keep telling us.

Ignoring the fact that this was a pretty random list by inri222 (I'm not even sure what his point was), I don't know how that list disputes the idea that the pickin's are pretty slim for actresses over 40.

When was the last thing Julia Roberts was in that mattered?

Jennifer Aniston has never really mattered as a movie star.

Reese Witherspoon has been mia for years before Wild this year.

Replace Wild with Malificent and the same is true for Angelina Jolie.

Sandra Bullock and Charlize Theron are still doing all right for themselves, but I hardly think that's indicative of Hollywood suddenly changing it's m.o. after 100 years.

Personally I don't think much of anything about Zero Dark Thirty worked, but that wasn't Chastain's fault.

Re: Jessica Chastain

I was so pumped to see Zero Dark Thirty.

Then I saw it. 93% on RT tells me that a lot of critics would rather just praise it then admit they didn't fucking know what was going on.

I can't argue with any of that, except that I'll ask what actresses matter these days as movie stars anyway? Same with the guys. Stars just don't have the same appeal to the public they used to have. I'd like a lot of these actresses more if they made movies I wanted to see. I'd love to see Jolie in more SALT-type movies. I'd love to see Reese do something badass. (Maybe she does in WILD, but I'm just not into "finding-one's self-on-a-journey-back-to-nature" movies. Unless the character is Kwai Chang Caine, of course. Or Billy Jack. I.e., with kung fu in it. )

As for Jessica Chastain, I've only seen her in one movie, TREE OF LIFE, and she didn't get to do much in it, so I have nothing to say about her.
