The only thing I can think of is Taken did really well in Feb, so Fox wants to own that month with action flicks. The way Warner has tried to own March with comic book or similar style flicks.

They probably feel Die Hard isn't the huge draw it once was, but still has plenty of life for box office. Just not up against the slew of CGI that superhero and robot flicks bring to the summer.

It's opening in February because the Die Hard brand ain't what it used to be. It won't win against whatever comic book movie is released next summer.


And I do think the first Die Hard is a great movie. Just because it's fun doesn't make it fluff. There's the Academy Award mentality that a good movie can't have actually be entertaining and has to have you in tears or whatever.

It takes a considerable talent to put together a movie like that. There's technical ability, staging an action sequence you can follow while being able to keep track of everybody. And it's still got character beats. McClane may be routine by now, but it was pioneering to have an everyman in over his head. And a likeable villain portrayed by a serious actor brought in his own plot twists that nobody expected.

There's a hell of a difference between that and say, your average Steven Seagal vehicle.

McClane wasn't the every day man in DH 4. He's more like Steven Seagal was in his early films.

And he shouldn't be the everyday man 30 years later and with the previous experiences (movies) under his belt.

Although I enjoy LFODH, McClane was too far in the other direction where he was basically a superhero.

Damn shame they are releasing this in Feb 14th 2013. These used to be "event" type movies why did they even bother if they dump it on the 14th, no less.

Why does he still say "Yippy Ki Yay"? He only said that to Hans after he referred to him as John Wayne so really after the first movie he never needed to say that catch phrase.

Does Arnold need to "be back" in every movie? No, but it's a catch phrase that he's associated with so they always have him say it. At least Bruce's are confined to this series.

"Ill be back" at least makes some sort of sense in the context of Arnold's movies. In The Running Man when he says it to Killian and he responds with "Only in a rerun..." it still works.


The "yippie-ki-yay" thing was a random snarky retort McClane made while he was sneaking through the Nakatomi hallways when Gruber said he was probably a nobody raised on cowboy movies, then Gruber fired it back at him at the final scene.

Yes it's the movie's big catchphrase but in the context of what's actually happening it points out how much this series struggles to make plausible sequels.
