Re: 2012 Oscar Predictions Thread
Will someone please explain to me why everyone is saying this is such a bad year for film? I found it to be one of the best years in recent memory. While people's reactions were mixed, I thought Tree Of Life was fucking magnificent, LOVED Midnight in Paris, LOVED The Artist (and when was the last time such a risky endeaver like this was made and paid off so beautifully?), LOVED Hugo.. and then there's all the movies that didn't get nominated. Jeez, Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is now one of my favorite Fincher films. In fact, I think I went to the movies more times this year than in the previous 3 combined. I thought it was a pretty fantastic year for film.

You seemed to enjoy yourself a hell of a lot at the movies in 2011. That's awesome. Isn't that all that should matter? |
Re: 2012 Oscar Predictions Thread
I thought this was a great your for cinema.
Keep putting your picks in! Let's see who can guess the highest! |
Re: 2012 Oscar Predictions Thread
I don't think any of these movies will become classics over the years. The Artist will be a trivia question 20 years from now, future generations won't watch it. Midnight in Paris will get lumped in with Woody Allen's vast catalogue. The Tree of Life will have its fans, but not many. The Help will be forgotten. Hugo will be forgotten. War Horse will be remembered for the stage production. Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close was never relevant to begin with. The only movie that has a shot at being remembered is Moneyball simply because baseball is timeless.

Re: 2012 Oscar Predictions Thread
Definitely one of the most lackluster years in recent memory. Most of the pundits expect The Artist to dominate. I have it winning 5, but it could definitely add 2-3 more. But for the sake of surprise, I do hope The Descendants shakes things up.

Re: 2012 Oscar Predictions Thread
The black bolds are the actual predictions, while the ones in blue are my "wild cards" that I would consider upsets but would not really shock me.
Best Picture - The Artist; The Descendants Best Actress - Viola Davis, The Help; Michelle Williams, My Week With Marilyn Best Actor - Jean Dujardin, The Artist; George Clooney, The Descendants Supporting Actress - Octavia Spencer, The Help; Berenice Bejo, The Artist Supporting Actor - Christopher Plummer, Beginners (no wild card here; anyone else would be a complete shock) Best Director - Michel Hazanivicius, The Artist; Alexander Payne, The Descendants Best Original Screenplay - Woody Allen, Midnight in Paris; Michel Hazanivicius, The Artist Best Adapted Screenplay - Alexander Payne, Nat Faxon and Jim Rash, The Descendants; Steven Zaillian, Aaron Sorkin and Stan Chervin, Moneyball The other ones I have a good idea about are: Foreign Language Film - A Separation (screenplay nominee, so it has to win, right?) Score - The Artist The song - Man or Muppet Visual Effects - Hugo (it's considered the best film in that category, and that's how the award usually goes) |

Re: 2012 Oscar Predictions Thread
After reviewing the buzz, as of yesterday I'm changing my Actress pick to Viola Davis. I still have the wild card of Melissa McCarthy for Best Supporting...wonder how that'll turn out.
