The Weekend Box Office Thread (2/3-2/5) Where 'Big Miracle' Takes It In The Blowhole

Both newcomers CBS Films’ The Woman In Black and Fox’s Chronicle are looking tied for No. 1 at this early point with $5M-$7M for Friday and $13M-$15M for their opening weekend. Right now Woman In Black has hung onto a slight lead longer than originally expected, including evening pre-sales. Both pics are low-cost/high-reward bonanzas for their studios, especially because marketing budgets were kept to a bare minimum. Fox may win today but lose guys on Sunday, so CBS Films could overtake. With the weekend’s biggest budget debut, Universal’s Big Miracle is No. 3 looking like $1.5M-$2M for Friday and a $5.5M-$7M weekend. Stay tuned.
Why do you continue to release films geared towards men on Super Bowl weekend? You're supposed to release films towards women. Just look at past examples: 2001 had The Roommate at $15 million. 2010 had Dear John at $30 million. 2009 had He's Just Not That Into You at $27 million. 2008 had Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour at $32 million. Instead, we're looking at a weekend where there's nothing exciting to see. The Woman In Black and Chronicle were done on the cheap, so they'll be profitable, but by how much? |

But....it's got Drew Barrymore underwater gazing with wide-eyed love at a whale! How can that only be third?

Was this one of the thread titles you had planned out? Yikes. ;)
I didn't think WIB would open so well. I've heard it looks great, but lacks scares. Chronicle I'll likely see next week. I've only heard good things. |
Re: The Weekend Box Office Thread (2/3-2/5) Where 'Big Miracle' Takes It In The Blowh
WIB was just another typical PG-13 horror movie. No substance, just a lot of BOO! scares. The only thing going for it was that it had Harry Potter in it.

Why would Harry Potter be afraid of ghosts? He went to school with them, for Ron's sake!

MI 4 has now reached $600 million worldwide. Dragon Tattoo should pass or be just shy of $100 million US this weekend. It's also great to see The Descendants doing well with its expansion.

MI 4 is also soon to be Cruise's highest-grossing film ever, and it's 5th all-time WW for Paramount. So much for the assumption his days on top are over.

One year later, and I don't even remember what The Roommate was

Is this the first film from CBS to make money? I really really really hope HUGO continues to do well so it can either open in my town in 2-d (it has never came to my town) or re-open on 2-d showings in theaters 50 minutes away from me so we can finally go see it . Still the only Best Picture nominee I havnt seen.
I say SAFE HOUSE opens with 30+ Million next week and the Vow (which looks like vile torture) opens with at least $19 million. I dont think Phantom Menace 3-D is an event at all. Maybe $13 million for that unfortunately. And even though Journey 2 is supposedly kickin ass overseas I dont think it will make over $10 million next week.. |

With this news, hopefully Brad Bird gets to do whatever the hell he wants next (in terms of live action). Maybe a bigger budget on his 1906 project. Then again this is still his third highest grossing movie, so he's doing pretty well for himself.
If it weren't for Iron Giant wrecking EVERYTHING, he'd be truly impressive :) |

Re: The Weekend Box Office Thread (2/3-2/5) Where 'Big Miracle' Takes It In The Blowh
This was one of the more successful Super Bowl Weekends for movies.
Chronicle had a $12m budget and pulled in $22m which is apparently a good $6m above the most optimistic predictions. Woman in Black had a $17m budget and pulled in $21m which was also above estimates. Chronicle had excellent last minute advertising by Fox (having heard nothing about the movie really until the month prior to release) which seems to be working very well in its favor. |

Re: the "Beauty and the Beast" re-release. It's going to pull in half of what "The Lion King" did on it's re-release. Think Disney will continue to 3D their classics with numbers that low? |
