Re: Insidious 2 (Dir: James Wan) - TBD 2013

First - I'm glad that I watched the first one before heading out to see Chapter 2 ... a lot of references/events in this one are direct callbacks to events in the first.

That said...I didn't find this one to be as spooky as the first. It was like everything I was seeing in this one was just like I saw before ... My biggest issue was all of the
Spoiler:
time travel
.

Also, the comic relief killed some of the suspense (especially the poor-man's Galifinakis (sp?)) Maybe it was done to break tension and then pop you with a jump scare, but some of the attempted humor came off phony. After all, these guys are supposed to be ghost hunters and certainly have seen shit that would turn you white .. so why the jokes and general goofiness? (again, unless it was how they kept themselves from going insane from the horrors).

Amazingly, the theater I was in was mostly quiet - no talking back to the screen (must have been a result of the 12:40pm showtime). A few screams here and there.

3/5

Average .. not Wan's best ..

PS ... Anyone else think the Wan could/should be handling the Poltergeist remake? These films seem very much like that one. (Especially how when they yell in The Further it echoes, ala Poltergeist)

About 30 people in my theater, not A PEEP during both, except when
Spoiler:
pseudo-Galafinakis comes out ninja-style at the end, everyone laughed out loud
.

Poor-man's Galafinakis, so THAT'S why he looked familiar

Patrick Wilson in two ghost story movies back to back.

I meant to ask this earlier in the thread. I don't think I saw the first one but was interested in the second one. I should've gone to the double-feature last night. I guess I can find the first one fairly cheap.

I think the first one is pretty much required to see the second.

I loved that they made the Bride in Black
Spoiler:
a dude
. Ties in nicely the first film's blu-ray special features, and what it revealed about the actor that played that character in the first film.

I didn't have any issue with the
Spoiler:
pseudo-time-travel
in this film though. At least they didn't retcon anything.

Here's my review.

Re: Insidious 2 (Dir: James Wan) - TBD 2013

I made the mistake of seeing the 10:30 showing. The rather large theater was sold out with teens. Before the movie started, the theater manager and a police officer had to announce that they had a few "incidents" at earlier showings and that they now have a zero tolerance policy in regards to cell phone usage, yelling, food throwing, and general things that dumb teens do at a movie theater instead of you know, watching the movie. They even had a police officer stay in the theater for the entire movie. I think I saw him escort about 2-3 kids out for being assholes.

Good movie. I enjoyed it, although I grew a bit restless towards the end.

I've only ever had that happen once, before a showing of Accepted which made me realize I was too old to be watching Accepted.

Re: Insidious 2 (Dir: James Wan) - TBD 2013

I thought it got a little convoluted toward the end, but that's my only complaint. Still very well made and a lot of fun. The audience was going berserk too, which makes horror movies more fun...at least for me.

I hope they do a 3rd chapter.

Yep, I thought that in the movie too. He would be a perfect fit.

That, or Conjuring 2. I tweeted that he should do Conjuring 2 and he "favorited" the tweet back when the first one hit theaters.

Here's hoping.

The baby's lil' walker/stroller thang got on my nerves. Yes. I would deprive an innocent child of such an obnoxious gadget.

I liked the film and was entertained. Loved the shots of the house. I was waiting for Sid Haig or Beverly Washburn to come running out the front door.

Re: Insidious 2 (Dir: James Wan) - TBD 2013

I thought this was pretty good. I watched the first one right before going to see part 2, so all the callbacks to the first one were fresh in my mind. I thought the story about
Spoiler:
Parker Crane and his mother
was quite good and plenty creepy. In a world where so many sequels devalue the original, I thought the story of part 2 and how it was entwined with the first only served to enrich both films. The only thing about part 2 was it wasn't quite as scary as the first. It definitely had its moments, but it didn't sustain the feeling of dread and creepiness throughout the entire film like the first one did. Then again, it was something slightly different from the first, which is I guess all you can hope for from a sequel. But yeah, I liked it.

3.5/5

Re: Insidious 2 (Dir: James Wan) - TBD 2013

Spoiler:
Hey mom, I know I just saw dad try to kill you, then we beat him with a bat, and now he's chasing after us, but since I can travel into the Further when I'm asleep, just give me 15 seconds and I'll nod off over here in a corner with my can and string.

WTF?

Pretty weak movie overall, but I can't say I hated it.

Re: Insidious 2 (Dir: James Wan) - TBD 2013

I didn't hate this, but it was undeniably stuck up its own ass for almost the entire running time.

The plot is so muddled and unfocused, with characters seemingly belonging to two different films. Once the bifurcated storylines come together, things don't get any better.

The ADR in the opening was totally distracting. We can get that the young lady is Lin Shaye's character, having her overdub the actress playing her was... odd.

There were zero scares here, too. I can't think of a single moment of faux tension that amounted to anything.

There were some ideas within the film I found interesting (I like "the further" concept and enjoyed spending time in that place), but this was so unfocused in comparison to the first film, which only looks stronger now. I hope Ch. 3 reigns things in and ends this now-franchise on a high note.

that was my biggest complaint of the movie - all the scares were based sudden appearences of spectrals accompanied by loud music - ugh... please. SyFy channel's 'Paranormal Witness' has more tension and creepiness than this. Also it didn't help that at the screening I was at, which was midday today I was the only person in the entire huge auditorium. On the plus side I did like the story, which got a little bit wonky near the end and the Dolby Atmos mix was quite inventive. Waaay better than the first film which made want to hurl something at the screen. Not great (by a long stretch) but entertaining.

I don't know if it was watching both back-to-back and there being so much continuity almost as if it was a four-hour story, but I really really enjoyed the "experience."

Had never seen 1.

Re: Insidious 2 (Dir: James Wan) - TBD 2013

I liked this but it wasn't as scary as the first. I know, a sequel not being scary as the first is a novel opinion but it was almost as if this movie wasn't too concerned with scares. It was much more concerned with exploring The Further and how it's not just a world for the dead but also a time travel machine. It was weird but I did like it. Even though it wasn't as scary, it didn't feel lazy which almost seems contradictory but there you have it.

So what you're saying is it was more of a supernatural drama than a horror movie?

Sure. I didn't exactly say that but I can't argue with it.

Finally saw this and sadly, I hated it. I'm such a huge fan of the first. I thought it was one of the best horror movies I've ever seen. But "Chapter 2" was just terrible on every level. The story, the script, the acting. It wasn't scary. It wasn't creepy. It wasn't fun. With the original team back from the first film, what the hell happened?

What went wrong? You did. You were in the wrong frame of mind. First of all you should have seen this in the theater with a packed audience, screaming and laughing and having fun. Secondly you should have sneaked in a bottle of whiskey that you completely drank during the course of the movie. That's what I did and I loved it just as much as the first.

Re: Insidious 2 (Dir: James Wan) - TBD 2013

I missed it in theaters but just finished watching it - I redboxed it (I'm not paying no $22.99 on Amazon) and thought it was average. It wasn't bad but it wasn't great like the first one. The first one made it on my Top-3 list of that year. I agree with Chapter 2 being a bit more "supernatrual-ish" as opposed to full on horror like the first one was. Chapter 2 also has lots of things going on instead of focusing on just ONE thing like the first. You get a bunch of origin tales about the good guys and the bad guys that it feels a tad bloated. Maybe an extra 5-10 minutes could have helped?

I will say that the ending rocked, though. Granted, you have to have a keen ear and memory to get the reference.
Spoiler:
The clicking sound you hear at the end that Shaye reacts to is the clicking sound the demon makes from part 1. Looks like he'll be back for Chapter 3 in 2015.
