Shut it down.

A remake is going to be hard. Bronson is too associated with the originals. But if they must, Im glad the studio doesn't want to outright adapt the book again, because audiences would be turned away. In the book the vigilante eventually goes crazy and starts shooting innocent people on the street. Good luck with that.

That's too bad. I liked Big Bad Wolves for the most part.

re: Death Wish - remake (D: Eli Roth) S: Bruce Willis

BREAKING: Eli Roth is set to direct Death Wish, the MGM/Paramount remake of the 1974 hit with Bruce Willis playing the reluctant vigilante made famous by Charles Bronson. It becomes the latest effort by Roth to move from his bloody genre-film origins to studio fare. His previous film was the 2015 Keanu Reeves psychological thriller Knock Knock. Roth will direct the script by Scott Alexander & Larry Karaszewski. Joe Carnahan scripted the original. Roger Birnbaum is producing.

Roth takes the job after the exit early last month of Big Bad Wolves helmers Aharon Keshales and Navot Papushado, who left over creative differences when they wanted changes in a script Willis had signed off on; the studios didn’t want to go in that direction on what they hope will be a down-the-middle franchise launch. Roth works this in alongside his hosting duties on Shark After Dark, the nightly talk show that runs June 26-30 to cap each day’s programming during Discovery’s Shark Week. After making his bones directing pics like the Hostel series and the cannibalistic The Green Inferno, Roth has been knock-knocking on the door to make more mainstream fare. He most recently had been attached to direct the prehistoric shark pic Meg at Warner Bros but left that job for creative reasons. WME, 3 Arts and attorney Carlos Goodman rep Roth.

The thread title seems like a joke news announcement from 2007, but here we are in 2016 with a deal in place.

Eli Roth is promising as a I know he will make it R rated. I hope Bruce Willis actually cares to make it a good movie. Why can't they just remake Death Wish 3?

So "horror master" Eli Roth no longer wants to make horror. Maybe his buddy Robert Rodriguez can produce the next Spy Kids and let Roth direct.

Roth will undoubtedly make a terrible film that completely misses the point of the original.

Willis will sleepwalk his way through the entire thing.

not exactly sure what could be brought to the table.

It's ironic that for all the killings by Bronson's character in the first movie, the thugs who devastated his family never get their comeuppance.

Sometimes that's the way life is.

I really like the cast. Dean Norris is great and always love D'Onofrio, though he looks stupid in Rings movie...

I like the cast for the most part, but I'll have a hard time buying Bruce Willis as an everyman who transforms into a hard-edged vigilante. Too much history in these types of movies. Not that Charles Bronson didn't have action movies behind him, but I'd have loved to see them cast against type for the lead role, find someone less known for action roles. It won't stop me from seeing it, though. Vincent D'Onofrio and Dean Norris in the same film? Sold.

During production of the original, producer Dino De Laurentiis begged director Michael Winner to include a scene where Bronson found and meted out justice to his wife's killers, but Winner refused, realizing how contrived and false that would be.

I've always felt that the original DEATH WISH would have been much more effective with someone like Jack Lemmon in the lead. To me, it made no sense that muggers would even think about mugging Bronson, let alone approach him.

IMDB says Lemmon was originally set to star in it with Sidney Lumet attached to direct. Other stars offered the part, according to IMDB, were: Steve McQueen, Clint Eastwood, Frank Sinatra, Burt Lancaster, and George C. Scott, none of them quite mugger bait.

If they're gonna remake it, why not Adam Sandler?

I agree. For a role like this you want an every man who gets pushed over the edge into a vigilante. Similar to Hoffman in Straw Dogs.

Re: Death Wish - remake (D: Eli Roth) S: Bruce Willis

I think William H. Macy would fit that bill.

Could be a good vehicle for Kevin James.

Too late. Kevin James already has an "action" movie coming out:
