Scariest non R rated movie?

I'm seeing a lot of buzz about "The Woman in Black" and how it's supposedly the scariest movie ever made. Now, I'm definitely not one of those people that totally dismisses a movie if it's not rated R, but most of the movies I think of as being truly scary are all rated R, but this movie is PG-13. What are some of the scariest non R rated movies?

Jaws.

Ya know I was even going to mention Jaws in my original post but I didn't. I've seen Jaws literally 100 times so the scariness just isn't there anymore but yeah Jaws is definitely a scary movie. Personally I think Poltergeist is too. Both of those movies are PG but obviously came out before the PG-13 rating was invented. I'm sure both would have been PG-13 if they came out today.

Also, some will say Poltergeist and while I think it's lame and stupid, I can see why some might be scared by it.

Who is saying The Woman in Black is "The scariest movie ever"?

I'll add The Sixth Sense which I believe is PG-13.

Maybe And Soon the Darkness (1970), but I'd describe its effect more as a gathering dread than scariness.

I've never heard of this but many people, including myself, would say that a gathering dread is precisely what makes a movie scary. I'll check this out.

Jaws was the first thing that came to mind but I'll toss in Gremlins. Like Jaws, it's no longer all that scary, but watch either for the first time when you are young and you will be having some restless nights.

I completely agree. Jaws is almost 40 years old now. At this this point I honestly can't imagine seeing it for the first time. I said it before, but I've seen it a hundred times and could probably almost recite the whole movie line for line but even still I'm captivated by it. I'd kill to go back in time to 1975 and see it for the first time. I guarantee it would give me nightmares for years.

Haven't really seen many non-R rated scary films. The two that I recall from my youth off the bat that gave me nightmares is both Jaws and Poltergeist III. The latter being that scene of the old woman molting in to the bugs. I have not seen Poltergeist 3 since 1989, when it first came to video, meaning I was only 3 at the time but I still remember that scene (and still creeps me out) so that gets my vote.

1408 gave me a few legit scares the first time I watched it.

Insidious
The Sixth Sense made me uncomfortable
Signs had one of the most scariest scenes imo.

Insidious fucked me up something fierce, and while The Ring had a glossier studio feel, it gave me some pretty big jumps in the theater.

A movie that really scared the crap out of me was Carriers (2009), a post-apocalyptic virus movie. Talk about gathering dread... I was nervous through the whole movie.

I'd have to add in Poltergeist as well. It's just the feel of it that brings on the creepy. I'm always amazed that it does it w/ that rating. Way to go, Hooper or Spielberg. We need another horror film by Spielberg...you know...if it was him or not.
