I'm pretty sure he meant Thief.

Are you referring to the "Director's Cut" DVD? It's almost like he added in footage from videotape; the framerate or whatever seems off. I have an old, grubby cinema cut on a UK DVD and it's in slo-mo and looks fine, though it's been a while.

I'm glad to see another thread on Thief, especially from a new fan! Great to see. I hope interest keeps building so that a proper release of the original cinema cut gets released - Blu-Ray and anamorphic DVD. It's been broadcast on MGMHD, so a new transfer of the cinema cut to HD exists! And keep Mann away!

For what it's worth, the 2009 UK DVD from Optimum is supposedly the cinema cut and anamorphic, though single-layer.

I dvd'r this over the weekend on MGMHD. Loved it! The transfer was really nice as well. I believe it will be on again either this weekend coming up or the one after.

I think this is the type of movie that gets better upon multiple viewings so I'm looking forward to watching it again.

Re: Thief (1981 film directing debut by Michael Mann)

I just want to add that Thief is available for streaming in HD on Netflix. I haven't watched it yet, so I don't know if it's cinema cut or director's cut (no mention of director's cut).

I believe our general collective response to this in the Criterion BD thread was the Randy Marsh jizz pic. It even had a great caption.

Nice. The look on Randy's face is priceless. I'm late to the party as usual.

I really hope it's not the fucking "director's cut" (a misnomer) or at least the not the same one as the old DVD.

Re: Thief (1981 film directing debut by Michael Mann)

In all fairness the old "director's cut" (really a director's chance to tweak, years later, as with Heat and Mohicans) isn't that bad, just that the slow motion at the end was tweaked and ended up looking like soap-opera video. I can't imagine that Criterion would put out something like that.

I love to see enthusiasm for this film! I myself did not know it even existed until The Onion mentioned it in their review of Heat in 1995.

One of those rare films that just grabs you with each re-watch, and gets better each time.
My dad doesn't like many films, sees their story-telling devices and cliches immediately. I wanted to show him the tools - the drill press with electromagnet, the burning lance - and he got hooked into the story.

I've seen the movie this year on cable MGMHD and the print looks great.
No blueish, teal tint to the movie like what I've seen done to movies that get re-mastered like MAGNUM FORCE (1973).

This has been on my list to see for a very long time as I love most of what I've seen from Mann. I'll just blind buy the Criterion now.

Now if only Mann would let them release The Keep. Not a perfect movie by any stretch (and that's being kind) but it works for me somehow. One of the few films that I really want to own.

THE KEEP has one of the most beautiful sex scenes in a Hollywood movie.

Re: Thief (1981 film directing debut by Michael Mann)

Saw this for the first time a couple of days ago. Definitely my favorite Mann film now, and I still really love Heat. Still haven’t seen Ali or The Keep. Pretty much had the same reaction to this as everyone else. Soundtrack just incredible.
