SAFETY NOT GUARANTEED (2012) (dir. Trevorrow) (Aubrey Plaza, Mark Duplass)

Two magazine employees head out on an assignment to interview a guy who placed a classified ad seeking a companion for time travel.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1862079/

slashfilm.com review:

Spoiler:
Safety Not Guaranteed starts out with a simple premise: Three employees from a Seattle weekly magazine are assigned to go on a trip to find and interview a guy who placed a mysterious classified ad seeking a companion for time travel. (The ad is seen above).

Was it a joke? Or is the guy crazy? Intern Darius Britt (Aubrey Plaza) is sent in to try to uncover the true story. Darius joins Kenneth Calloway’s (Mark Duplass) time travel mission and forms a friendship with this seemingly delusional man. With Government-style suited men in hot pursuit, Darius is unsure if she has been implicated in something illegal or if Kenneth is actually telling the truth. And Darius has gotten too close to Kenneth to betray him or know for sure.

Meanwhile, Jake Johnson is trying to hook up with an old high school flame who now lives in the area, as well as trying to get the virgin Indian intern Arnau (Karan Soni) laid. These two side story-lines aren’t as strong as the main arc, but there is still enough laughs to keep it entertaining.

I’ve been calling this the most ridiculous yet awesome misfit time travel relationship comedy ever made, which in itself is ridiculous. The fact of the matter is that there is no other movie I’ve seen quite like this. Sure, the whole “is he insane or is he really –insert some sci-fi thing here–” plot has been used before in K Pax, Michael, Special, Phenomenon, Miracle of 34th Street, Sound of My Voice (which sold to Fox Searchlight last year at Sundance) and others. But Safety does it a bit differently; not like you’ve seen before.

The hilarious script is actually based on a real classified ad from years ago. The man who placed the ad gave the producers permission to use it as a starting point for a film, and he even has a cameo in the movie.

But Safety Not Guaranteed isn’t just a comedy. The story has real heart. That, and Star Wars jokes. The climax of the film was met by the largest applause that I’ve heard at Sundance this year. Festival-goers were on cloud nine leaving the theater. I wouldn’t be surprised to see this film win the audience award. I would be surprised if the film doesn’t get picked up quickly.

Aubrey Plaza is charming. I first saw her in Mystery Team at the festival in 2009 and said she was a young talent to watch. Plaza has since had some mainstream roles in Funny People, Scott Pilgrim and has become a regular on the hit comedy series Parks and Rec. Safety is Plaza’s first starring role, and she runs with it.

Mark Duplass plays the character seriously for great comedic effect. He might be insane but you want to believe that he’s for real. Jake Johnson is also great in a supporting role. Johnson is an up and coming name in comedy, who now has a starring role on the hit tv series New Girl. You might also recognize him as the on-screen director in Paper Heart or as Teddy in Max Winkler’s Ceremony.

I expect to see great things from director and co-writer Colin Trevorrow. This is his feature debut and he already has a couple projects on his slate including writing World War X (about a man recruited by the government to prevent a terrorist from the future who is using time travel in order to reshape history) for Warner Bros.

Sounded pretty good but it lost me at Star Wars jokes.

I'm surprised that neither Slashfilm, IMDB, or anyone on here yet has mentioned the fact that THIS FILM IS BASED ON A MEME.

Re: SAFETY NOT GUARANTEED (2012) (dir. Trevorrow) (Aubrey Plaza, Mark Duplass)

Saw it on Monday night. If it weren't for the fact that I saw Moonrise Kingdom exactly 15 hours later, this would be the best movie I've seen this year easily. Regardless, it's absolutely phenomenal! Beautifully written and acted, extremely well-edited, and a terrific unexpected ending that worked great. Highly recommended!

Does anyone know if this is opening wide? I would love to see it but it isn't playing anywhere near me.

Was surprised by how good this was. It's a Duplass Brothers production, so it retains some of their style, but it's not a Duplass movie.

One of the better comedies I've seen this year.

Saw this today after work. Great little film. Nice mix of comedy with the drama and romantic elements. The ending caught me by surprise. Definitely recommended (if you can find it)

This is my favorite movie of the year so far. Has a hell of a lot of heart and vulnerability. See it if you can.

Re: SAFETY NOT GUARANTEED (2012) (dir. Trevorrow) (Aubrey Plaza, Mark Duplass)

I liked it despite plot holes at every corner and turn. The two big take aways I had from the film were that Jake Johnson needs to get more work in Hollywood and that I would bang Jenica Bergere even if "life has shit all over her face."

Even with the Duplass brothers involvement, their first 2012 film (Jeff, Who Lives at Home) is by far the superior picture.

for not invoking any use of Scarface (Push It to the Limit) during the film.

Re: SAFETY NOT GUARANTEED (2012) (dir. Trevorrow) (Aubrey Plaza, Mark Duplass)

Spoiler:
The biggest, most apparent one was Darius never asking Kenneth about his first time traveling experience. Yes, you can chalk it up to the ambitious tone of the flick and Kenneth's first time traveling experience could've been that of saving Belinda. Who knows? However, I thought the film not addressing that was both a cop out and a plot hole.

Re: SAFETY NOT GUARANTEED (2012) (dir. Trevorrow) (Aubrey Plaza, Mark Duplass)

Spoiler:
see thats where I disagree. I thought up until close to the end that the film did a pretty good job of making Kenneth seem like kind of a sad lonely guy, who was for lack of a better word "crazy" for believing he could actually time travel. So when Darius interviews Belinda it makes perfect sense that Kenneth had a crush on her that he built up in his mind as a real relationship. All being par for the course with his delusions of time travel. At that point I really believed Kenneth was the guy that Belinda painted a picture of. So when it came to be that he could actually time travel, it made the earlier parts of the film a richer experience and gave it more context.

Re: SAFETY NOT GUARANTEED (2012) (dir. Trevorrow) (Aubrey Plaza, Mark Duplass)

Uh, no.

Spoiler:
The moment the two government agents show up, it guarantees the film will end with Kenneth being a time traveler. The conflict of Darius interviewing Belinda and moments later confronting Kenneth about it simply doesn't work as the film has already set-up the ending.

I just wish the director and writer took the film in a different direction. When Kenneth mentioned he was headed back to 2001, I thought we could've had a wacky 9/11 time travel comedy on our hands. Seriously, someone give me a bunch of money to make that movie.

Saw the trailer for this in front of the 21 Jump Street Blu-ray, so it's coming soon. I like the chick that's in it - she was in Scott Pilgrim. Looks neat.
