The Weekend Box Office Thread Where George Lucas Ruins Black History Month

Today marks the release of Red Tails which includes such winning dialogue like "Die, you foolish African!".

Now it makes sense why the film wasn't released last holiday weekend or in a week when Black History Month officially starts.

Hollywood studios were stunned by how well the George Lucas banner film Red Tails did in matinees today at 2,512 North American theaters. Until they discovered that the Lucasfilm/Twentieth Century Fox movie’s marketing inside the African-American community resulted in busloads of midday filmgoers for the Tuskegee airmen’s story. As a result, numbers “doing beautifully” all day could potentially “fall apart” tonight, as one studio rival cautioned me. There’s a wide gap in estimates as a result. So it’s a toss-up right now whether Red Tails or Sony Pictures/Screen Gems’ Underworld Awakening will be No. 1 Friday playing in more theaters (3,078). The fourquel is doing better than the threequel, which is rare for franchises domestically. Projections are for the Kate Beckinsale horror actioner to win the weekend. Warner Bros’ Oscar-buzzed 9-11 emotionfest Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close expands in its 5th weekend after expanding into 2,630 theaters today. The PG-13 drama is neck-and-neck for 3rd place with Martin Luther King weekend’s big winner, Universal’s R-rated thriller Contraband, which should drop a mild -53% today and an even milder -47% for the weekend. In fifth place is Relativity’s Steven Soderbergh-directed R-rated Haywire actioner opening in 2,439 theaters. Here are the estimated grosses with numbers refined throughout the evening. Analysis coming:

1. Underworld Awakening (Sony Pictures) NEW [3,078 Theaters]
Estimated Friday $8M-10M, Estimated Weekend $24M-$27M

2. Red Tails (LucasFilm/Fox) NEW [2,512 Theaters]
Estimated Friday $6M-$8M, Estimated Weekend $15M-$18M

3. Contraband (Universal) Week 2 [2,870 Theaters]
Estimated Friday $3.5M-$4.5M, Estimated Weekend $12M

4. Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close (Warner Bros) Week 5 [2,630 Theaters]
Estimated Friday $3.5M-$4M, Estimated Weekend $11M

5. Haywire (Relativity) NEW [2,439 Theaters]
Estimated Friday $3M-$3.5M, Estimated Weekend $8M-$10M

Strong start for U4. I wonder what the percentage breakdown of 3D showings (per screen $ & # of screens) vs. 2D is?

I haven't seen The Artist yet, but I'm sure it'll do solid business through awards season thanks to all the accolades.

Re: The Weekend Box Office Thread Where George Lucas Ruins Black History Month

DId a quadruple feature today. Underworld 4 and the Artist sucked.Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close had a shit load of problems but it moved at a good pace and was watchable and Haywire was pretty cool and tense.
Really wish they would stop the Underworld films.
Oh and what the hell is it with Sony and the color Blue? Do they own stock in a color? UNderworld films, the Smurfs, Blu-ray. Just saying.

ooh, 33% RT rating for 'Red Tails' - and the Washington Post review was brutal - this will tank ... fast.

Yikes, didn't know it was that bad... Worse than Pearl Harbor?

you must hate the fact that 'Underworld: Awakening' is 78 minutes with 10 minutes of end credits.

Do you honestly think the demographics for UNDERWORLD AWAKENING and THE ARTIST are the same?

Well, this is not an official survey, but my great grandmother was torn deciding between the two as they both reminded her of her youth.

I'd she's having a tough time with the choice she might not be so great.

Yea, but I heard Optimus Prime's robo-dick makes an appearance, so there's always that for you.

Do they seriously say that in this movie? Thank god Lucas didn't direct Pearl Harbor, or he would have changed it so the Americans shoot first on the Japanese!

That's impossible, he has been sitting on that for years now. It must be a mock up.
