Did anyone who saw this think it was just awful? I haven't seen it, but a friend (who would mean nothing to you guys, but whose film opinion I trust very much) said it was the worst movie he'd seen in years. That was enough to make me wait for home video...unless someone here can talk me out of it. Just for reference, I think THE ASSASSINATION OF JESSE JAMES....is one of the best Westerns of the past 20 or 30 years.

Assassination of Jesse James was one of my favourite movies of the year it was released, so I was really looking forward to this one... I was with it at first, then Brad Pitt shows up, does fuck all but talk to Jenkins in a car and has two chats with Gandolfini - layer that with heavy handed 2008 election soundbites that don't add much to the story or shallow 'themes' being expressed and you've got a very disappointing flick. All the ingredients were here to be a classic - great cast, nice dialogue, interesting story...but executed with way too much self importance, not nearly enough substance and a pace that makes 90 minutes feel like 150. Ugh.

I didn't like it. It had some good scenes here and there but, as a whole, it never did gel as a complete film. And so much of it was conversations between just 2 guys at a time (but not the same 2 guys and not even interesting conversations) that it was like "My Dinner With Andre" except the conversations were very dull. (The only good one was Brad Pitt's comments at the end, which just made me wish it had more interesting talking like that.)
The lack of a score hurt too. There were some incidental songs scattered throughout, but scenes that could've benefited from a score ratcheting up the tension lacked both music and tension.

Yea. I was let down by the lack of resolution. It's like the movie cut off a half hour early. And I don't understand the choice to do that.
Even if there was little conflict during the resolution, we missed scenes with Gandolfini and the 'target'. And Pitt working out his payment. And what they decided to do with the other robber - or if something backfired.
The scenes we did get, I enjoyed. And we could have had another five of those scenes. It just cut out. And I don't understand if I missed some cool message - or what happened. Were they trying to say something about 'quitting' if they're not 'getting paid'? Is there some neat, deeper way to look at it? If so, I didn't get it.

Is it me or did this disappear from the theaters way too quickly especially for a movie starring Brad Pitt?

I actually really enjoyed the movie and it did have a point. It's a gangster movie about the economy and holding people responsible for the crimes they commit.

I can't say I'm surprised to see audiences split on this film, but I'm a little bit shocked to hear people say this film has no point. It has a lot of political commentary, but it has a message that comes through loudly. This movie is truly a love-it or hate-it type of feature and I found myself really enjoying it.
Those who are looking on any of the sites, such as Cinemascore, should just ignore those scores. If you're not confident in this movie, then just give it a rental. It deserves a chance from anybody who enjoys crime thrillers.

I had completely forgotten about this movie and was looking at the theater that is the last to show movies before they leave and after all the other theaters stop showing it and saw it there and reminded me of it. Seemed weird that a Brad Pitt movie would disappear that quickly. I don't think it went even a month before being relegated to the last-breath theater.

Except you don't come to discuss why you dislike the movie, you just say "I hate this movie" "I hate this movie" "I hate this movie". You jump at any chance to bash this movie.
Just move on.

I thought this movie was a solid C. It's shot well, and I actually really liked most of the dialog, but it still felt shallow when it was all over.

Just watched this tonight and thought it was great. The acting, dialogue and direction were excellent. The style felt like a 70's film taking place in 2008.
