Weekend Boxoffice 11-18/11-21 Breaking Dawn to make over 100 m but does any1 care?

from Deadline

FRIDAY 7 AM UPDATE: Here we go again. Not only is Summit Entertainment’s Breaking Dawn Part 1 helping surge the North American box office today after a months-lasting slump. But it’s also a big shot in the arm to international ticket sales. The Twilight Saga film franchise’s fourth installment rolled out after 12:01 AM into a whopping 3,251 domestic theaters and then expanded into 4,061 theaters by midday. And the film is off to a great start internationally as it started its roll out in 54 markets around the globe with Wednesday screenings from select territories totalling $8.9 million with many more countries, data and their grosses to come over the coming days. I’ve learned that an internal Summit Entertainment estimate puts this weekend’s domestic opening of Breaking Dawn Part 1 at $110 million to $125 million. That will be the 2nd biggest weekend debut since the studio began making Stephenie Meyer’s vampire romance novels into films — behind only the Twilight sequel New Moon. However, rival studios think Summit is lowballing and expect Breaking Dawn to debut to $142+M.

per bom, the highest grossing weekend grossers are

1 Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 WB $169,189,427
2 The Dark Knight WB $158,411,483
3 Spider-Man 3 Sony $151,116,516
4 The Twilight Saga: New Moon Sum. $142,839,137
5 Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest BV $135,634,554

From comingsoon.net;

The first number for the North American release of The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1 is in. The fourth film in the popular franchise earned $30.25 million from 3,521 locations at midnight.

The opening was similar to The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, which brought in $30 million at midnight, and topped the $26.3 million earned by The Twilight Saga: New Moon.

"Breaking Dawn --- Part 1" expanded into 4,061 theaters earlier today and is on track to match the $142.8 million debut of "New Moon."

The main group that will care, aside from the "Twi-hards" will be Summit Entertainment. Today begins the official countdown for the studio... It's 364 days until they release another film that will be successful.

After December 2012, the countdown to the end of Summit Entertainment begins. (Well I guess they might have Step Up 5-11 in development since that seems to be the only other films they can market.)

I like Summit though. They use their Twilight money to fund stuff like 50/50.

They also were involved with THE HURT LOCKER and RED.

Their post-2011 calendar is pathetic though.

The problem Summit Entertainment has is:

1. They tend to make shitty films.
2. They can't even market their own shitty films to actually make money.

Outside of the Twilight series, none of their films has done more than $100 million domestically. Hell, only four of their films have passed the $50 million mark:

Red: $90 million domestically (on a budget of $60 million).
Knowing: $80 million domestically (on a budget of $80 million).
Source Code: $55 million domestically (on a budget of $35 million).
Letters to Juliet: $55 million domestically (on a budget of $30 million).

They're modest-sized successes, no doubt there. However, for every one of these films, you end up with films like:

Astro Boy: $20 million domestically (on a budget of $65 million).
The Three Musketeers: $20 million domestically (on a budget of $75 million).
Furry Vengeance: $17 million domestically (on a budget of $45 million).
The Ghost Writer: $15 million domestically (on a budget of $45 million).

Most of their films have trouble pulling in a profit or breaking even. Look at their budgets compared to how they do both domestically and overseas. What's more depressing is this is the same studio that has graced us with such films like The Hurt Locker, The Brothers Bloom, and my own personal favorite, Sex Drive. Each one tanked theatrically. At least The Hurt Locker was able to make money back on video after the Oscars.

The advantage that Summit Entertainment has is they have the capital and finances to fund most of their films as they've been doing it for years before doing their own distribution. For example, they've financed the Step Up films before selling the rights to Disney (domestically) and Universal (internationally). According to BOM, it looks that Summit will have the exclusive rights to Step Up 4. Who knows, like anything else, that could change and Disney could be the theatrical distributor again. However, there's so long you can go on limited funds without having a hit. Just look at The Weinstein Company. The ace Summit has up their sleeve was with the Twilight franchise, but that's over and done with come next November.

The Darkest Hour and Man on a Ledge look like they could be fun and I thought the world of Step Up 3D so I'll probably see Step Up 4, but I have to agree with the majority. Their 2012 slate looks like shit.

Christ, who'll make the shittier pictures next year? Lionsgate or Summit?

So we should be grateful to the Twilight franchise for stimulating the economy?

While I agree that Summit can't market a film, in no way was The Ghost Writer a shitty film, it was one of the better films of 2010.

Revised estimates are $72 mil for Twilight and a possible $140 mil weekend. The surprising part is Happy Feet Two is only estimating for $23 mil for the weekend. WB can't be too thrilled with that opening, especially with the 3D premium. And The Muppets arrive next week, so that'll provide more competition.

I wonder how HF2 would've done if it was marketed as 2D only. I think parents are sick of paying the premiums for 3D and it's showing.

Five years later for a sequel no one was asking for. I hated everything about the first one, I can't imagine families had fun with it either.

Wasn't it the top-grossing and best-reviewed animated family film that year? Plus it won the Oscar too... I've never seen the movie but I'm pretty sure it was exceedingly popular.

Happy Feet earned $384 million worldwide, and $198 mil in the US.

It was so blatant with its anti-religion/Save the Earth message, it drowned out the 'fun'

I guess George Miller shouldn't make follow up's to highly successfully kids films. Babe : Pig in the city was a disappointment as well.

Those obnoxiously annoying "rappin' dancin' penguins" ads probably didn't endear itself to your average comic book nerd waiting for their fourth screening of Captain America to start. ;)

It's, you know, for kids!
