Detailed analysis of the 3D conversion, including an explanation of the image depth where some objects, specifically larger ones in the background were much more subtle or flat altogether, courtesy Jim Cameron:

I made plans to see this with my friend this weekend, the same friend I saw it with back in '97. But I couldn't wait so I also saw it today. I was impressed with the 3-D, and I especially liked the sense of depth on the over the shoulders shots. I'm going to have fun seeing this again.

re: TITANIC in 3D (Cameron) - re-release

I wish I would've caught the IMAX 3D showing sooner rather than its final day, because I would've loved to seen this again.

Wow.

Filmmakers, take note. This is how 3D should be done regardless if its a conversion or shot in 3D. The entire thing, for all 197 minutes, felt immersive. While the 3D stood out and was effective for most of the picture, it really took hold once the ship hit the iceberg.

The one thing I about the IMAX DMR process is how much was "open matte" and how much wasn't? The film almost seemed to be in an aspect ratio of 1.7:1 which would put it close to the native aspect ratio of Super 35 (1.65:1). During a lot of the dialogue scenes, there were massive amounts of headroom at either the top and bottom of the screen. I could even say the same for a few of the CGI shots later on in the film (such as the iconic scene of Jack and Rose at the front of the ship). Yet, there were a few times like Rose sitting with her mom and the other ladies or the ship beginning to rise where one could easily tell it was cropped just due to the awful amount of compression on the screen.

I'm trying to convince my wife, who skipped out on the IMAX presentation, if she'll go see it again with me in RealD. However, I don't know how that's going to compare to IMAX.

I must admit that the J.J. Abrams part cracked me up.

I saw it in LieMAX (smaller DLP presentation) two days ago.

While the modified Aspect Ratio was indeed interesting, specifically the awesome 'helicopter pan' of the Titanic going full steam (favorite shot in the film with my favorite music) I found the 3D to be plagued with serious problems compared to the FLAWLESS RealD presentation I saw.

The LieMAX image was stunningly clear as it should be, but every once in a while there were stand-out shots that were blurry (complete double-vision as if you took the glasses off) and certain shots had a crystal clear foreground 3D image, while background objects or people in the shot were completely doubled and blurred.

Also, massive crosstalk in many shots.

I don't know if it's because it was a fake IMAX and not the real thing, but it didn't compare to the RealD which was stunning from beginning to end, top-notch 3D presentation all around.

I guess pending the outcome of what happens here, we can expect Cameron's sequel to come out, oh say Fall 2020.

re: TITANIC in 3D (Cameron) - re-release

From what I remember years back there were plans to do this in 1998 or so with the 2.0 version of the ship completed by this year but funding fell out and the idea was met with a lot of resistance anyway. It wasn't one billionaire's idea though, it was a Titanic society group of some kind.

re: TITANIC in 3D (Cameron) - re-release

I remember the recreation of Titanic but then never heard about it again. I admit, I wouldn't mind touring the ship but I would't take an ocean cruise.

BTW: There was a Titanic II movie about a recreated ship retracing the original Titanic's route. A sunami slammed an iceberg into it. LOL No, Cameron wasn't involved.

I'd sail on the Titanic 2, mostly because I'm a cruise fanatic (nine cruises so far).

The tour of the Titanic set on the 3-disc DVD set is one of my favorite extras

re: TITANIC in 3D (Cameron) - re-release

It's time for another James Cameron rerelease!!!! Titanic is coming back to theaters for its 20th Anniversary for one week in AMC theaters Starting December 1st. Both 2d and 3d showings. I was there to watch it 20 years ago, and didn't go to the 3d rerelease 5 years ago, but I might consider it since the 3d version is considered one of the best post-converted.

How about Cameron gets his ass moving on a High-Def master of The Abyss and True Lies, so they can have a proper release on BluRay, let alone a DVD after all these years!

Nice! They can just re-release all the Cameron movies if they want. But I did see the 3D re-release last time around and it was a really good conversion. I'll be checking it out again for sure.

Looking forward to seeing this at my local Dolby Cinema with the inevitable UHD disc release probably soon to follow.

I was thinking of catching it in Dolby Cinema but an early show is $18

re: TITANIC in 3D (Cameron) - re-release

The only downside of a Dolby Cinema is the price. But now that I finally got my Movie Pass care that took a few months to get for some weird reason, and I usually only see one or two movies a month on a Dolby Cinema screen, I don’t mind the premium so much. I was annoyed by how loud Justice League was last week, especially high pitch sounds, being unbearable at times.

Just glad I don’t have to drive 40 miles round trip ever since one was installed at my local AMC a little over a month ago, and less than 3 miles away.

Could someone here tell what's so special about the Dolby Cinema at AMC. I checked the theater here and they aren't even doing a 3d showing? Doesn't sound worth it.

Just go next Tuesday at AMC when it’s $5. I think their Tuesday promo is going on until 12/18.

Think of it as Liemax that's worth the upcharge. Significantly better pciture quality and sound than a regular screening and I would still rate it better than Liemax.

re: TITANIC in 3D (Cameron) - re-release

I recently saw the 2017 NatGeo special about the 20th Anniversary, which showcases James Cameron doing more research about the sinking.

He’s really obsessed with this historical event. He loves explaining his banana theory about the ship splitting while it was sinking.

It uses laser projection plus Dolby Atmos. The recliner seats have subwoofer kickers. It's arguably the best digital presentation currently available.

3D is offered only at a few locations as far as I know, which is fine by me, which still fells like gimmickry. I’d rarther have Dolby Vision and Atmos, which arguable is the best presentation for films right now. Ragnarok looked so good I saw it three times at the Dolby Cinema.
