That would have been impressive, since the book didn't come out until 1998.

To clarify: when I saw the trailer for RUM DIARY, I thought it was something that would have been perfectly at home in 1971 and I might even have welcomed it then, despite the flood of "counterculture" films at the time. As it turned out, I loved WHERE THE BUFFALO ROAM, the first actual Hunter Thompson film, when it came out (1980), but it didn't do well and I'm wondering whether it had simply passed its moment or, conversely, had come out ten or 20 years too soon.

The Rum Diary is also a film that's spent nearly the past decade in development hell. Christ, the thread on the film here at DVD Talk starts in 2003.
