Joss Whedon has wrapped his next project. Only thing is, no one seems to know much about it.

Fans of Whedon's Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Firefly and Dollhouse were rejoicing late Sunday night after frequent Whedon collaborators Nathan Fillion, Sean Maher and costume designer Shawna Trpcic tweeted a link to MuchAdoTheMovie.com.

The site doesn't offer any further details, but the news did spur speculation around the Internet about what the project might be and how Whedon found time to finish it while also working on the upcoming Avengers movie.

Some speculated that it might be his follow-up to the web series Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog. The obvious question, of course, is whether it is in fact some sort of adaptation of the William Shakespeare play.

Meanwhile, Trpcic answered some questions about the project on Sunday night but gave only vague answers.

In response to the question "full-length film, short or web series?" she wrote: "Film ish not sure in what format he will release it."
I'm guessing it's a small scale Dr Horrible-type thing. Anybody know anything more about this??

As long as it doesn't suck like Dr Horrible, I'd be down for some updated Shakespeare with that cast.

Finally watched Dr. Horrible a few weeks ago and loved it, would love to see another "small" project like that from Whedon again.

Once again "Angel" is ignored, like in that quote above. Interesting considering it has two of its leads from the series in this film.

Dr. Horrible was fantastic (as is most things surrounding Joss), but I'd like more info before I get excited about this.

I actually really liked Dr. Horrible as well. Great BD too.

Buffy and Dollhouse were much higher profile shows, and Firefly had a movie.

Out of curiosity, can you tell me some more things that "suck" like Dr. Horrible? I really need some good material, and as you and I appear to have opposite ideas of "suck," you may suggest great stuff.

Love Dr Horrible.

As far as not mentioning Angel, I would think that mentioning Buffy, Dollhouse, and Firefly provides more info to the uninitiated than mentioning both Buffy and Angel. Dollhouse was uneven, but it was his most recent series, and Firefly has a big following.

"Angel" was sort of an extension of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," so I can see why it would be the one left off of the list.

My opinions are well known here so I feel no need to make a list for you. As for Dr. Horrible, I gave it a shot because of the talent involved but found myself completely bored.

I also found it dull and a bit corny, but that sums up most Whedon work for me. But not everything works for everyone.

Re: Much Ado About Nothing (Dir: Joss Whedon)

UPDATE: Joss Whedon has issued a press release that fills in the blanks on Much Ado About Nothing, the film he shot in secret but revealed last night in a Twitter post. Here are the salient details: Bellwether Films, which issued the initial Tweet, is a micro-studio hatched by Whedon and Kai Cole for the production of small, indie narratives for all media, “embracing a DIY ethos and newer technologies for, in this particular case, a somewhat older story.” Whedon’s film is a black and white contemporized rendering of Shakespeare’s classic comedy, adapted and directed by Whedon. This version, shot in 12 days “entirely on location in exotic Santa Monica,” stars Amy Acker (who starred in the Whedon-scripted Cabin in the Woods) and Alexis Denisof as Beatrice and Benedick, the world’s least likely lovers headed for their inevitable tumble into love. “The text is to me a deconstruction of the idea of love, which is ironic, since the entire production is a love letter, to the text, to the cast, even to the house it’s shot in,” Whedon writes. Nathan Fillion is Dogberry, Clark Gregg (who’s in the Whedon-helmed The Avengers) is Leonato, Fran Kranz (Cabin in the Woods), is Claudio and Reed Diamong is Don Pedro. Whedon expects the film to hit the festival circuit next year, “because it is fancy.” It was also clearly low budget, he hinted, explaining that the cast was “all dedicated to the idea that this story bears retelling, that this dialogue is as fresh and intoxicating as any being written, and that the joy of working on a passion project surrounded by dear friends, admired colleagues and an atmosphere of unabashed rapture far outweighs their hilariously miniature paychecks.”

EARLIER, 4:16 AM: This happened while I was asleep, but last night, Bellwether Pictures tweeted that Joss Whedon has wrapped Much Ado About Nothing, a movie he’d been been filming in secret. Whedon, who also fit in the Marvel superhero pic The Avengers, has a cast that includes Reed Diamond, Sean Maher, Ashley Johnson, Nathan Fillion and Clark Gregg. There’s a graphic of a guy in snorkel gear chest-deep in water, holding a martini, and the one-sheet says the Whedon film is “Based on a play.” Looks like a contemporary version of Shakespeare’s work about two pairs of lovers, one wide-eyed and the other cynical, and how they are manipulated in ways that test their relationships.

I think it sounds awesome. I'm not a fan of everything Whedon does, but I love a lot of his stuff, so I will definitely be checking this out. I think it's cool that he's embraced different mediums (web shows, comics, etc) to get his stories told. :)

Making its debut at this year's Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) is writer/director Joss Whedon's "Much Ado About Nothing," a modern-day take on the classic William Shakespeare comedy that stars a cast of Whedon favorites including Nathan Fillion, Sean Maher, Amy Acker, Alexis Denisof, Ashley Johnson and Tom Lenk. Shot in only 12 days at Whedon's Santa Monica home, the micro-budget black-and-white production is a far cry from the director's blockbuster superhero flick "The Avengers," but like everything he produces it's undoubtedly a labor love.

Check out the first official stills from the film below and let us know what you think!

Most of the quotes in that trailer are from Internet-based fan sites rather than "real" critics. This movie could, if nothing else, prove to be interesting and different. I'm quite fond of Branagh's version myself.

Indiewire and the New York Post are fan sites?

Get the fuck out of here.

I don't know who Christopher Schobert is though, if it'd be Maltin or something, it might be different. And there's a laudatory quote from Lou Loumineck on the cover the Resident Evil 2: Apocalypse DVD, so.... Then again, I could be ass-ignorant about contemporary critics, that's a distinct possibility But Internet film critics still tend to get looked down upon by "real" ones, at least in my experience.

Michael Keaton makes that film! ;)
