Rushmore is great, as is Royal Tenenbaums, the kids really loved those two. I usually have the students choose a few films during the year, last year they went with Shaun of the Dead, which I had never seen. I enjoyed it.

Other than the fine movies listed already, I would like to throw in:

A Man for All Seasons

Silence Of The Lambs

Airplane .
Making them sit through a really dull 60s Oscar Baity period piece will turn kids OFF and make think anything older is stuffy, stagey and boring . If your gonna turn off the kids anyway why not something good like Andrei Rublev or Wreckmaster Harmonies

I love Silence Of The Lambs but I think someone would get repremanded for showing that to high schoolers.

And I honestly think kids today would be offended by the gay charecter in Airplane since it's just borderline blackface level dehumanizing. The only funny stuff in the film is actual with Leslie Nielsen,Kareem and June Cleaver the protaganist is boring and a ton of the jokes are dated as fuck.

I appreciate your opinion Howie. I personally don't subscribe to the "oscar Baity" notion though. Well written historical pieces are certainly not everyone's cup of tea, but I first was introduced to this film in highschool and we got quite a lot of good discussion points from it. I can't vouch for today's teens and their turn offs, but I have shown this to my (then) 14 year old daughter and she was quite engaged with it and has seen it twice as the dialog got by her and she had looked up the historical context between the two.

As for your other opinions, I certainly agree with you. Perhaps Silence is a bit beyond the bounds of high school "official" playlist. Airplane is certainly dated.
