i doubt anybody born in the 1980s or after has even heard of the original book or movie, so, for them, it's something "new."

I'm not sure how I feel about all these remakes. I mean, Titanic was a remake, too, yet nobody scorned the idea of James Cameron doing it.

Of course, a lot of remakes are pure crap - The Omen, The Amityville Horror, Halloween, Planet of the Apes and Ira Levin's own The Stepford Wives - but I don't really mind if they take what might be an obscure film (and "Boys from Brazil" was fairly obscure) and elevate it, do justice to it, stay faithful to it.

Titanic wasn't a remake? That's like saying King Kong or Planet of the Apes wasn't a remake. They're not original.

Remake is a very particular term that indicates the filmmakers intended to make a new version of an existing film. It gets thorny when the so-called original film is itself based on a novel or play, or has been often pointed out this weekend after The Thing's release, another film or short story. It has to be clear where the filmmaker's impetus to create the new version stems from; obviously, for the studio, it is whatever has the most brand recognition, but this is never necessarily true for many filmmakers.

Buttmunker, calling Titanic a remake indicates that it was based on an already-filmed narrative film. It wasn't. Though there was already a film called Titanic that also involved the historic event does not mean one was a remake of the other.

Planet of the Apes is not strictly a remake either. It's a new adaptation of the same book. One can make remake claims because the Burton film uses elements from the film series that weren't in the book.

King Kong is certainly a remake.

Yeah I remember that whole subplot in A Night To Remember about an upper-class girl, a low-born dude, a moustache-twirling villain, a missing blue diamond, and the bookends with the submarines from the future.

Saying Titanic was a remake is like saying Saving Private Ryan is a remake of The Longest Day...

The only one that you could be considering was the 1953 film and The Cameron version is different but has some similarities. So there "could" be an argument here -popcorn-

Both are two different fictitious stories that take place on an actual true life event.

Everything else was just TV miniseries, TV movies and docudramas.

'Titanic' is a remake.

That crapfest 'Saving Private Ryan' is a remake of 'The Longest day' too, and everyone knows it.

I don't care if films about the Titanic count as remakes or originals, as long as they prominantly highlight the villainy of Lt. William Murdoch, murderer.

I do think a new version of The Boys From Brazil could work. If anything, new versions of stories where the first go-round was middling should be prime fare for remaking, not more iconic films.

Also, I can't decide which is a better remake of Die Hard, Love Actually or Santa Buddies./DrMabuseLogic

Titanic was the umpteenth remake of Romeo and Juliet.

As for Boys From Brazil, it'll be hard to top the creepiness of that Hitler kid at the end.
