Horror movie performances that were Oscar-worthy?

Since it's getting close to Halloween and awards season, I thought I'd throw this out there.

Kathy Bates, of course won for Misery, and Jodie Foster and Anthony Hopkins for SOTL (which I'd put in the suspense/thriller category), but performances in horror films usually go unnoticed by Academy Award voters. What are some performances in horror films that you think were Oscar worthy?

I'll start with a few brilliant pieces of acting in horror films....

Mia Farrow- Rosemary's Baby
Max Von Sydow-The Exorcist
Ellen Burstyn- The Exorcist
Sissy Spacek-Carrie
Piper Laurie -Carrie
Boris Karloff-Frankenstein
Deborah Kerr-The Innocents
Gary Oldman- Bram Stoker's Dracula
Jobeth Williams- Poltergeist
Jack Nicholson-The Shining

+1 on Tony Perkins in Psycho.

I still find his performance to be brilliant and one of my all time favorites. The stuttering, the hand movements, the tensing of his jaw.

I've always thought Michael Keaton deserved a win for his performance in Beetlejuice.

Although not quite horror it's definitely Halloween themed.

Dead Ringers is one of my favorites, I've seen it a dozen times at least. And pretty much everyone involved in film back when it came out was shocked that Irons wasn't nominated for an Oscar (he even kind of stuck it to the Academy a couple years later when he won for Reversal of Fortune by thanking Cronenberg and received a round of understanding applause).

I remain impressed with Bill Mosely's performance in The Devil's Rejects, and consider it award worthy. While some horror films like Exorcist or even Let The Right One In are classy enough that it isn't unimaginable they might garner Oscar nominations, I am confident a picture as sleasy as DR ever could.

Holy shit at 44secs in!

Good choice.

Rutger Hauer in The Hitcher is one of the best performances I have seen, horror or otherwise.
Likewise, the late Bernard-Pierre Donnadieu's phenomenal work in Spoorlos.

So Oscar-worthy, in fact, that the Academy members in 1932 actually voted him one.
(Tied with Wallace Beery for THE CHAMP, though.)
