Horror movie performances that were Oscar-worthy?

Lili Taylor in The Addiction (And Christopher Walken for Supporting Actor, of course)
I'll also co-sign with those mentioning Bill Mosely in Devil's Rejects. It's a great accomplishment considering how hammy and forgettable he previously was with the same character in House/Corpses.
Along with The Entity, I've read that this is the most horrifying movie for women.

Belén Rueda in "Julia's Eye's". A performance 100 x better than "The Orphanage". Which was fantastic, too. This trailer is not that great and doesn't do the actual film justice. It's very atmospheric, chilling, suspenseful and creepy.

Veronica Cartwright in Alien. It's a fairly small part, she's understated, and there is nothing showy about it, but it's what I always think of when good acting is being discussed.
She's very natural in this movie, and her performance really does bring home the horrific nature and gravity of the situation they are in. Most people in the same situation would've been a bundle of nerves just like she was.
Also, Marilyn Burns in the original "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre". No one ever looked as realistically terrified as she did in that film. The best scream queen ever.

Kay Hawtrey in Funeral Home is another that came to mind.

More a thriller than a horror film, but Class of 1984 contains two of the genre's greatest performances in those from Timothy Van Patten and Perry King.

Great choices. Love Timothy Van Patten's performance there. I was shocked when I found out he is the same Timothy Van Patten of Sopranos fame.

Oh, really? I've never watched The Sopranos, but Van Patten should have garnered a major movie career based on his performance in Class of 1984. Perry King was equally good, though he had the less showy role as the dignified, earnest, increasingly exasperated music teacher. They rose above the pic's bald-faced exploitation interests.

Since it's getting close to Halloween and awards season, I thought I'd throw this out there.
Kathy Bates, of course won for Misery, and Jodie Foster and Anthony Hopkins for SOTL (which I'd put in the suspense/thriller category), but performances in horror films usually go unnoticed by Academy Award voters. What are some performances in horror films that you think were Oscar worthy?
I'll start with a few brilliant pieces of acting in horror films....
Mia Farrow- Rosemary's Baby
Max Von Sydow-The Exorcist
Ellen Burstyn- The Exorcist
Sissy Spacek-Carrie
Piper Laurie -Carrie
Boris Karloff-Frankenstein
Deborah Kerr-The Innocents
Gary Oldman- Bram Stoker's Dracula
Jobeth Williams- Poltergeist
Jack Nicholson-The Shining

Agree with Gary Oldman and whoever mentioned Barbara Hershey in The Entity.
Another one I'd throw out is Charlotte Gainsbourg in Antichrist.

I was on cable this weekend. I turned it on and one look at that medical equipment and I couldn't change the channel quick enough.

Sheila Keith was magnificently stern as the warden in the scary potboiler The House of Whipcord.
