MIPCOM NEWS: A movie version of US network Fox's action drama 24 could go into production next spring, after a screenplay for the long-awaited feature was delivered, its star Kiefer Sutherland has revealed.
Speaking at the launch of his new network drama Touch, written by Heroes creator Tim Kring, Sutherland said the process of turning the show's 24x60' format - which plays out in real time over 24 hours each season - into a two-hour film had been more challenging than expected.
He told the audience: "We're very close (to a movie). We've worked very long and hard the last two years on a screenplay. It was actually much more difficult to take this idea that was in 24, which had 24 hours and 24 episodes to tell a story, and condense that into two hours. We thought it would be easier but it was much more difficult.
"Now a wonderful writer named Billy Ray has finished the screenplay. Hopefully we're looking at the end of April to start production, and we'll see."
24 ran for eight seasons on Fox between 2001 and 2010. The movie is being developed by 20th Century Fox.
Finally some good news. With an late April shoot, I would expect this to come out no sooner than 2013. It might be possible to get this out by December, but that might be pushing it. However, they still don't have a director even though Tony Scott is still rumored.
Some of you may recall Billy Ray was hired to write the 1st draft, but the studio rejected it.

Billy Ray? Didn't they ditch his script months ago? I seem to recall one of the Fox execs claiming it was crap. The fan consensus was that it probably had too much plot and not enough random shooting to satisfy said exec.

Yeah, but apparently he was asked to do a re-write. I heard Kiefer and Brian Grazer were involved overseeing the re-write, so hopefully it's good.
Now that a script is done, they just need to hire a fricking director. Hopefully Tony Scott is available. I would like to see what he brings to this.

I was hoping they would ditch the 24 hour timeline in a 2 hour movie format.
24 is a franchise now. Long running TV show, a video game, board games, books, etc...
They can easily write a 2-hour action movie that doesn't have to obey the 24 hour format. 24 is name brand now. When people think of 24, they don't think of 24 hours anymore, they think of Jack Bauer kicking ass. 24 has evolved.

Eh, as bad as the 24 hour format was at times, it made the show unique. As a two-hour movie, it's just a generic spy flick.
Kiefer is great bit it's not like there are a lot of supporting characters running around out there or big 24 stories left to tell. They've already nuked a city on that show.
I suppose it'll just be running-shooting-political corruption-running-torture-shooting-mole in CTU-random Kim appearance-Jacks on the run-shooting-torture-torture-shooting-dead politician-credits. Who knows, might be ok.

...and got dragged away screaming every villain cliche but "And I would've gotten away with it too, if it weren't for that pesky Bauer!"
I'd like Tony back, but with the way he was written off, it isn't feasible.

Is this definitely a sequel to the show's finale, or could it take place at some point earlier when Tony was good and bad ass?

Yeah but that was from 5 years ago. I figured this deserves an updated thread since there is more information and a probable date.

I don't care how much time they took trying to transform Chloe throughout the years...I still really don't like her character. Hope she won't return.
But then I'm left to wonder if any original characters will return besides Jack? Maybe his daughter?

Speaking of which, are the books any good? I saw a couple of them at Dollar Tree a while back and considered picking them up. I passed because, even though they were a buck each, my reading pile is big enough as it is and I didn't want to waste any money on the books if they were crap.
