Re: Acting over the years
Here's something to think about as far as acting goes.
Which young actor begining this century is a good tough guy actor?
Now compare him to the other decades tough, action guys.

Also...for as much as I love Wayne and Bogart and many wonderful roles they had...I will admit that if there was an acting off I don't think they'd survive that well. Wayne especially. Those era of actors were catered to roles that fit their "personality" They had a style, a mannerism. Something unique to their persona. And their characters are from that. I would say they were limited as actors, many of them.

Mark Wahlberg could have been a good tough guy actor, but he made terrible films like THE CORRUPTOR, THE BIG HIT and the PLANET OF THE APES remake. I thought he was the best thing about THE DEPARTED and only wish he had more leading roles in tough, gritty crime films.

I liked him in BOOGIE NIGHTS and that true story football movie, but I can't buy him as a tough guy. Not even in the DEPARTED. He just doesn't have that whatever it is that Clint, Arnold,Wayne had. Jason Statham is very good at tough. Danial Craig is more a great actor than a tough guy.
Like for 007 Sean Connery was good at tough, but not Roger Moore or Pierce Bronson.

I don't watch a whole lot of TV/Cable shows, but from what I hear, these past few years have like the golden age of television. Some people have even said, it's better than cinema nowadays..

I have to disagree about Falconetti. That was who I was thinking of when I think of exaggeration in silents. Now I think it's one of the greatest performances ever but it's far from realistic.

I...like The Big Hit.

Sisko (Avery Brooks) and Cisco (Lou Diamond Phillips), Mr. "Straight-Jackin' guy, Elliot Gould drunk with his huge belly, King Kong Lives...yeah I like it.

What was naturalistic in one era seems an awkward fit for another, that's all I mean.

If you want to see incredible, subtle acting in the silent era, check out the work of another Italian actress, Francesca Bertini. She's as convincing as any of the neo-realist actors of the post-war era.

Where did I ever say that John Travolta was even a good actor?

Agreed. I watched The Maltese Falcon last night and, apart from some brief histrionics from Peter Lorre (which was believable in the context of the movie), there was nary an over-the-top performance.

Neeson I think has been wonderfully utilized lately. For a good while his roles were more on the calm side..but lately he's moving it around. And it's fun to see him do fun things in these films.
