Killer Joe (D: Friedkin, S: McConaughey, Hirsch, Haden-Church)

So far this has gotten good reviews from Venice.

Plot:
When a debt puts a young man's life in danger, he turns to putting a hit out on his evil mother in order to collect the insurance.

Supposedly it's also very funny. Looking forward to a new Friedkin.

The latest film by my favorite living filmmaker. Champing at the bit. Can't wait.

Yeah, I'm always game to see MM do something serious. I've known he's got it in him but he doesn't do it regularly.

Yeah get him away from the rom-coms and the bad action movies.

The guy has some serious chops. I have faith he's going to deliver in this film.

Haven't heard much of this, but looks like it has potential from what I've seen above.

Wow. That 1-line plot description sounds run of the mill. Friedkin is good at elevating material.

IMDB lists the rating as NC-17 for graphic aberrant content involving violence and sexuality, and a scene of brutality

Matthew McConaughey's Killer Joe Not Cutting Rape Scenes,
Will Release With NC-17

Actually, make that NC-17—that's the rating his black comedy Killer Joe will be hitting theaters with after the film's director,
William Friedkin (The Exorcist, The French Connection), and indie distributor LD Entertainment lost their appeal
for an R and have refused to cut another frame.

"We support the artistic integrity of our filmmakers—Academy Award–winning director William Friedkin and our screenwriter,
Pulitzer Prize winner Tracy Letts—and the film will be released in theaters on July 27 in its original version as an NC-17 film,"
company head David Dinerstein said in a statement.

The Motion Picture Association of America slapped Killer Joe with an NC-17 back in February, barring anyone under the age of 17 from seeing it.
In reaching its decision and sticking by it, the MPAA cited graphic sexual content, violence and one scene in particular of a brutal rape.

Given that many theater chains refuse to exhibit NC-17 movies, the decision to accept the rating will limit the number of screens
Killer Joe can play on, severely curtailing its box-office potential and hurting the awards buzz generated over the
Hollywood hunk's performance. McConaughey has also earned some of the best accolades of his career for his performance
as a killer who befriends a young man (Emile Hirsch) who wants him to murder his mother.

Dinerstein added that the filmmakers are sticking to their guns, however, after Killer Joe drew an
enthusiastic response when it played the Venice, Toronto and South by Southwest film festivals.

The flick costars Thomas Haden Church, Gina Gershon and Juno Temple.

When E! News caught up with Gershon at South by Southwest, the actress told us at the time
she hoped it wouldn't snag an NC-17 because she really wanted the widest possible audience to see it.

"People just need to know it's a very intense R. It's a very intense, emotional and visceral film," Gershon said.
"The whole thing is so arbitrary and so random. I've certainly seen a lot of movies that are just as violent as this and they're an R."

That certainly looked good and I love the players in it, especially Hirsch and Haden-Church.

Yeah, I'm really digging MM. I'm proud to say that about him. He's an actor that I KNOW can do so much more but he chooses those movies where it's really nothing but goddamn it. He needs good shit, man. He's talented.

Yep, this is one of my most anticipated films of the summer. MM can act, but what distracts some people are the 4-5 bullshit chick-flicks he does. They're obvious cash grabs, which affords him the luxury of doing something great on low end like this. He was great in Frailty and Lincoln Lawyer.

He's got a string of films that have a lot of potential coming up.

2 films with Lee Daniels, "The Paperboy" and "The Butler". "Mud" with Jeff Nichols. And "Magic Mike" with Soderbergh.

Currently there are no rom com's on his slate.

I really regret not being able to make to the USC Bing Theater screening we had a few weeks ago. I'm super excited for the film.

I've sat through some of the worst movies known to man just for her.
