We Need To Talk About Kevin -- 12/2/11 -- D: Ramsey S: John C Reilly, Tilda Swinton

Director: Lynne Ramsey

Starring: Tilda Swinton, John C Reilly, Erza Miller

Currently at 95% on RT (18/19 positive)

Plot: The mother of a teenage boy who went on a high-school killing spree tries to deal with her grief -- and feelings of responsibility for her child's actions -- by writing to her estranged husband.

Been a while since we've seen John C Reilly in a strictly serious film. I love his dramatic roles (Boogie Nights, Gangs of New York, Hard Eight, Magnolia), wish he would do it more often.

Looks really interesting.

I'm a big fan of Tilda Swinton. And of course...I more than welcome a serious JCR role. Son is a bit too stereotypical for my tastes....but I'm interested in the movie.....and the book as well.

I saw this last week. Excellent movie but very disturbing, as expected. Tilda is phenomenal and ably supported by the rest of the cast. The various actors playing her son are suitably chilling.

Looking forward to this one. Still 95% on RT but very few major critics have weighed in yet.

Last night one of my friends posted on FB that this was a not-to-miss movie on the big screen. Then this morning a friend texted me that he saw this and it gave him nightmares because it was so disturbing (likely hyperbole). I'm very interested. Hopefully I can find a screening near me.

its being distributed by the same company that did Bellflower, so if that came by you, theres a good chance you'll get a screening.

Opens limited release jan 27.

Also Tilda Swinton got a best actress nomination as well

This movie is INTENSE. I loved every second of it. Highly recommended.

Wow, talk about a totally stilted movie. Try to watch this movie from the kid's perspective: you're not the perfect kid, so your mom breaks your arm. She should be the one rotting in prison, not the kid.

He deserved to be the one imprisoned. Tried on 6 cases of douchebaggery. He's a total emo Robin Hood.

Conan, er, Tilda was fantastic though. I still thought Beautiful Boy was better.

I haven't seen this yet, and am interested. But it sort of reminds me of a story arc in The Shield, with the mom who had a son who was a potential future serial killer. She was even played by Frances Fisher who kind of looks like Tilda Swinton.

I love Lynne Ramsey, but this was awful. Heavy handed, over the top, really poorly done. No subtlety at all. I'm amazed it's getting such rave reviews.

You've made it clear you don't like good movies (Tree of Life?) so I'll take your opinion on this with a grain of salt

Very disturbing film. Something I don't ever want to sit through again just based on the story. Thought Swinton gave an award (nominated) worthy performance. And no, Kevin is the one who deserved to go to jail. They should have shipped his sorry ass off to military school when he was younger.

Yep. That movie didn't need to spoon fed you reasons why the event happened; it happened and the characters were forced to deal with it.

I agree, I found it to have its moments, but the central idea of it is so idiotic... the kid is the most cartoonish villain. I expected way more subtlety and intelligence in it. I liked some of the visual techniques they used at least.

Also, I never need to see another film where one parent cant convince the other that the kid is crazy. it is such a shameless manipulative convention at this point. so much of this belonged in a bad B-movie thriller instead.

Think of it this way: if this movie didn't work so tirelessly to stretch the thin plot as far and long as possible, it would have been over in 20 minutes.

It would have been a much, much better film if

Spoiler:
Kevin wasn't psychotic, he was just an asshole, and all of her paranoid fears were actually paranoid.

I thought I was the only one who thought that! It certainly would have been a better movie if he didn't go apeshit at the end and it was left totally ambiguous as to whether or not he's evil.
