The Lion is King of the Box Office: 9/16-9/18
Per Box Office.com:
Early estimates:
With $8.825 million on Friday, The Lion King 3D is off to an amazing start. It's quite clear that the film is enticing a healthy portion of nostalgic twentysomethings in addition to families.
Contagion is headed for a solid sophomore frame thanks to $4.63 million on Friday. A rush of mainstream media coverage on the science of the film is largely responsible for that.
Drive managed to rope in a respectable $4.024 million on Friday. The Ryan Gosling vehicle received a warm critical reception, and now the paying public seems to be on the same page: nearly 16,000 Flixster users have combined to give Drive a healthy 88% approval rating.
Straw Dogs delivered a lackluster $1.985 million on Friday. Director Rod Lurie's remake is clearly too harsh and uncompromising for mainstream digestion. Nearly 8,000 Flixster users have combined to give the film a disastrous 58% approval rating.
With only $1.558 million in the bank on Friday, The Weinstein Company's I Don't Know How She Does It is off to a very mediocre start. Sex and the City fans aren't following star Sarah Jessica Parker as she attempts to have a viable career outside of the beloved property.

Fucking amazing how powerful the draw Disney has. To just be able to throw an old movie back in theaters and pull in another 30+ mil in one weekend...incredbile.

Well, to be fair, it's not just an old movie. It's one of their most popular and is regarded by many people to be one of their best.
But yeah $30 million is pretty amazing.

I'm sure being "too harsh and uncompromising for mainstream digestion" is why Straw Dogs bombed. Right...
Great hold once again for Apes, although it's likely going to fall just short of outgrossing Burton's version. Even if it did, though, it still gets killed in admissions.

Good for Drive. I can see that movie being a sleeper hit. It's very likeable. But I really don't know how it'll hold up.

Yeah...went to a 5:15 showing...probably about 20 people in there. It was getting a solid reaction from the crowd. Good. I want this film to do good for Gosling and Refn. At the budget of $13 million, I think it'll get it's budget back. Like troystiffler...this has a sleep hit vibe going on. Word of mouth will hopefully help it out.

I wonder if Disney is regretting re-releasing Beauty and the Beast in 3D last year after those numbers. I wonder if this means Disney will begin the post-conversion 3D process on other films from that era (The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, etc.) based upon those numbers as well. Even if they don't see a theatrical release, they can still be done for the eventual BD/BD 3D/DVD/DC combo packs.
FilmDistrict has had good luck in the past by having films hold despite large opening weekends (Insidious, Soul Surfer). I wonder if they can do it again with Drive based upon the strong word of mouth.

3D is dead. The Lion King didn't make $30 million because it was in 3D.
Here's a great article about 3D dying. Some of it is pretty eye-opening.

The 1997 movie remake, JUNGLE EMPEROR LEO...

...which, ironically, drew on THE LION KING for inspiration.

The wife of the dude who did Kimba was pretty gracious about it if I remember correctly. She said that her husband would have been honored that Disney did a movie that was based on his, and was not going to sue or whatever.

I am LOVING "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" still in the top 10 after 7 weeks. And did the studios expect it to gross nearly 175M in the U.S.? I seem to recall boxoffice.com saying something around 120M. "In a world" where garbage like "The Smurfs" makes so much money, it pleases me to no end to see really good movies make money too.

My daughter and I have been watching the original series every Saturday morning (along with Speed Racer and the Super Friends). The box set is worth every penny I paid for it.
