They ment well. No animals should be harmed in a movie or no race should be made fun of.

I second the scenes in "The Exorcist." Not only those already mentioned, but the desecration of the Virgin Mary shown towards the beginning.

It almost never looks right. Usually the actor is just obviously spitting out something he/she was already holding in his/her mouth. Actual vomit usually involves an involuntary open-mouthed cough, gag, bend over, THEN stuff starts pouring out. You're welcome.

I have to disagree on school shooting scenes. Yes, you would see it in Elephant because that was a serious, dark film. You're not going to see that in a comedy or many other genres. It's all about context.

One thing I noticed while watching Ghostbusters is the hotel scene where they first meet Slimer, all of them are smoking. They smoke a lot in the film actually and it's disappointing that if they make Ghostbusters 3 then I highly doubt we will ever see a lit cigarette. So much of the population of the country smokes and Hollywood movies pretend like no one does it anymore. It's annoying.

Ivan Reitman even mentions the amount of smoking (well the lack thereof) in the Ghostbusters 2 commentary...and there's only five years difference between those films.

Not all of us. We need to start making obscene media and releasing it online ourselves (assuming we have artistic merit).

Oh and to answer the thread - Divine eating dogshit in Pink Flamingos.

Really any of John Waters older movies. Even on the special features for A Dirty Shame Waters lamented about having trouble finding funding because of how pussified Hollywood had become.

Re: Scenes in older movies that would never be 'allowed' by studios now

I think the remake of When a Stranger Calls is a prime example of this.

In the original the one key event of the entire plot is the fact that the killer has slaughtered the children in the house brutally. In the remake of course the children are not harmed in the slightest.

Similarly, the original House on Haunted Hill (1958 for love's sake) has a central character who brutally kills his wife and her lover and (it is strongly implied at the end) will get away with it. The same character in the remake plans to do this but his wife is in fact killed by a ghost and of course he pays for his actions by also being killed.

It is the sheer lack of balls in modern films that often dooms them to mediocrity.

Oh, and another one. The Posiedon Adventure has a central character who is a priest who spends the final moments of his life damning and cursing his diety. Nothing like that in Posiedon (2005.)

In Ghostbusters 3 they will also show them eating healthily (vegetarian) and not too much either.

Poseidon is a very loose remake of The Poseidon Adventure rather than an adaptation of the novel like the original film.

And let's be honest, the original film is a pretty sanitized version of the novel:

Spoiler:
In the novel, Susan (the seventeen-year-old girl) gets raped by a young crew member when she tries to find her brother after the ship's lighting suddenly goes out and everyone goes into a panic. After the rape, the crew member and her talk about what just happened. Despite her realizations that she might like this boy, the jackass just realizes he rapes a girl and ends up falling to his death when running away.

Blah blah blah.

The novel ends after the remaining survivors watching the ship sink and Susan dreaming of traveling to Germany to meet the boy's parents with the hopes that she's pregnant with the hopes he could have a legacy.

Try filming that one without people losing their shit.

Re: Scenes in older movies that would never be 'allowed' by studios now

I doubt we'll ever see a movie like THE WORLD ACCORDING TO GARP again. While far less violent than the novel, we have the death of a child, the described rape of a little girl, women who mutilate themselves, political assassinations, and a dissonant ending. I love the movie, but I've heard people who absolutely hate it merely because of the tragedies, and the shocking ending.

I also doubt that we'll see a hero punch out his leading lady, just for laughs and a feeble way to advance the plot as seen in STREETS OF FIRE.

According to the CDC only 20% of the US population smokes. So, doing some quick math, 80% of the population doesn't smoke. So, why should movies show a lot of people smoking when the vast majority of the US population doesn't smoke?

I find it very hard to believe that only 20% of the population smokes, when everytime I turn around, I see someone smoking. I don't know what CDC stands for, but whatever.

CDC=Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Here's their web page on adult smoking in the U.S.:
Adult Smoking in the US

I also find it hard to believe that only 20% of the population smokes. CDC is a government agency, so it's in their interest to crunch the numbers downward to make themselves look good. Like the police precincts in New York who arbitrarily turn felony complaints into misdemeanors to make it look like crime is going down. Until all hell breaks loose, like it did on Labor Day weekend when a couple of dozen people got shot in one 24-hour period and the numbers couldn't be fudged.

There's something darkly hilarious about that subplot. It's just so idiotic. Are there any other gems like that in the novel?

Every time I turn around, I see 8 people not smoking, and 2 people smoking. So there!

Re: Scenes in older movies that would never be 'allowed' by studios now

Frankly, I hardly see anybody smoking anymore. It's been made more and more difficult to smoke so a lot of people have quit or just do it in their homes.

It was easy for movies to show people smoking in restaurants and stuff like that but more and more states have gone completely no smoking in public places, so where are the characters supposed to smoke?

I wouldn't say "only 20%" that means at least one major cast member should be shown smoking and that very rarely happens in any major Hollywood movies.

For some reason it's very important to some of you to see people smoking in your entertainment. I suggest you watch Mad Men, I guess.

The moment they take out smoking out of period films is when I'll care. If it's set in the present USA...do we need to see someone smoking? If I BARELY see it now..it's fine to barely see it in modern set films

With all this anti-christian movies over the last 11 years I don't see how anyone can believe they would not film a scene like that today.

Re: Scenes in older movies that would never be 'allowed' by studios now

No movie will ever have a Middle Eastern person the 100% bad guy. They will always be shown to have a reason for their evil. Or the real villain will turn out to be a white rich guy/U.S. Government.

Even in "United 93", the Bad Guys were shown praying right after the wake up. This give the impression they are doing evil to please God. I do not remember it showing other people involved waking up and getting ready for their day.

If I was an Islamic Terrorist, I use this "United 93" as an encouragement to new "Recruits".
