Movies With Scores Composed By Musicians, NOT Composers
My wife and I were having this discussion the other night after catching Attack the Block. What films actually had their scores composed by not-actual-everyday composers, but by that of actual musicians? You know. Those known for their works primarily in the music industry first (and film scoring isn't their primary job).
P.S. Musicals don't count, so don't use say Electric Light Orchestra for Xanadu or Glen Hansard & Marketa Irglova for Once.
P.P.S. Don't use musicians that are known more for their composing works. I'm looking right at you Goblin and tomandandy.
Here's the ones we could think of right off the top of our heads:
Attack the Block: Felix Buxton and Simon Ratcliffe (otherwise known as Basement Jaxx).
The Boys and Girls Guide To Getting Down: Dirty Vegas.
Inferno: Keith Emerson (founding member of Emerson, Lake & Palmer).
Flash Gordon: Queen.
Hollywood Sex Wars: Arling & Cameron (contributed a good chunk of their last album, Hi-Fi Underground, to the director's last film: The Boys and Girls Guide To Getting Down).
Scott Pilgrim vs. the World: Nigel Godrich (otherwise known as Beck's producer; Beck also contributed songs to the picture).
Southland Tales: Moby.
Thumbsucker: The Polyphonic Spree and Elliot Smith (Elliot Smith was the film's original composer, but only had a few songs finished before his untimely passing).
TRON: Legacy: Daft Punk.

Despicable Me: Pharrell Williams.
Greenberg: James Murphy (the lead of LED Soundsystem).
Little Miss Sunshine: Devotchka (in addition to film composer Mychael Danna).
Rocket Science: Eef Barzelay.
Where the Wild Things Are: Karen O and the Kids (amazing soundtrack, terrible film).

Tangerine Dream also scored Michael Mann's Thief as well as Firestarter.
Wang Chung scored William Friedkin's To Live and Die in La.
Goblin scored Argento's Suspiria as well as other films.

Partly; Howard Blake also scored the film and the music is blended together. For instance, The Execution of Flash features Deacon on bass and Blake's orchestrations.
Dune is more of a technicality; Toto worked with James Newton Howard, but before he started to score films.
Tangerine Dream also, to my knowledge, solely scored Firestarter and Flashpoint. Can't speak to their other works beyond what has been mentioned.
Also, another question is Giorgio Moroder; he started as a musician and worked with Diana Ross before he scored films.

Lisa Gerrard came to mind for Gladiator but maybe she's done too many films to qualify.

Michael Penn - Boogie Nights and several others.

With so many movies under his belt (90+), wouldn't he be considered a composer now? Along with Kundun, he also received Oscar nominations for The Hours and Notes on a Scandal. Not solely a composer of course but it's not like he's only worked on a couple of films.
Of course I'm not familiar with his other work so I've only known him for his scores.
