Not necessarily, although most of the time, yes. There are movies that I thought were probably the best movies ever made, but were not my favorite. Synecdoche, NY fits that bill. I've seen few movies like it that had immense ambition and lived up to it (which sort of fits the metaphysical themes of the movie), but it was not my favorite.

Re: 5 favorite movies, of the last 5 years?

It's about impossible for me to do a list like this. There are probably 30 - 40 movies somewhat equally positioned in my mind and my top 'favorites' would be different based on when you asked. Looking at what I've probably watched the most, I think it'd be The Dark Knight, (500) Days of Summer, Watchmen, Zodiac and No Country for Old Men. I'd make no argument that they're the 'best', but I think they're the ones I've revisited the most.

I want to be your friend! I loved both "Superman Returns" and "Never Let Me Go" the most on your list. And I would give your other three my highest ratings too. However, if I had to choose my 5 favorite in the last 5 years, and damn it it was difficult decision, I'd have to say (in this order):

"The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo"
"In Bruges"
"Inglorious Basterds"
"Zodiac"
"No Country For Old Men""

....and "The Departed would be #6

Re: 5 favorite movies, of the last 5 years?

Here is my (fairly) predictable list:

In no particular order:
Pan's Labyrinth
The Dark Knight
Star Trek (2009)
Buried
Rise of the Planet of the Apes

Other movies I really liked: Spider-man 3 (it would be hard for me to not like a spiderman movie), Iron Man, The Departed, Moon, Captain America, Social Network, Inception

I'm sure there a bunch more I can't think of that might change the list somewhat, but I can't think of them now.

The Wrestler.
Kick ass
Social Network
Hot Fuzz
(Animation 3-way Tie)Tangled/Despicable me/Winnie the pooh-
District 9, 9, the departed, Watchmen, and Hard Candy get honorable mentions.

I did have "Thank you for smoking" in there instead of "Kick ass" because i thought it was 2006 but then looked it up and realized it was 2005

I haven't yet formulated three others to round out the list to accompany INCEPTION, but WARRIOR has definitely found itself a seat on my top five after seeing it today!

Re: 5 favorite movies, of the last 5 years?

1. There Will Be Blood- I think I saw this about five times in the theatre. As usual with P.T. Anderson, it's a masterpiece worthy of Kubrick. There's just no one as good as him.

2. Black Swan- A dream or a nightmare of a simple emotionally abused and stunted woman finally coming of age and awakening into adulthood. All told in an unabashedly baroque sort of magical realism full of metamorphosis and myth. A sex scene between Portman and Kunis doesn't hurt. Loved it.

3. The Tree of Life- It either worked for you or it didn't. It really really worked for me.

4. Vicky Cristina Barcelona- Funny, beautiful and heartbreaking. Woody at his finest.

5. Paranormal Activity- Okay, look. I never want to see this thing again, but I had to watch it in pieces. A couple of friends had to come over for about 5 nights in a row, sat me down and each night I could maybe take 10 or 15 minutes of it and no more. I then watched it again in one sitting (since I now knew what would happen) with my brother who was totally unfazed by it. This movie was so effective in scaring the everloving shit out of me and fucked my dreams up for days after the first time I saw it, that I had to include it just for being so damned effective. I'm still kind of marveling at how they took such a basic idea and were able to grab me by the fucking PONS!

Runners up:

Lives of Others- Great tale of living in a modern totalitarian state.

Zack and Miri Make a Porno- I'm a sucker for best-friends-falling-in-love movies and it portrays one of my recurring fantasies of getting to fuck my hot female friends with no strings attached. Plus, Kevin Smith really whips up the vulgar poetry with his dialogue in this one. Some of his best writing (and I'm not usually a big fan of his work).

Midnight in Paris- More great Woody.

Star Trek- A nice start to a new franchise, but please for crying out loud, let's cool it with the one problem of Star Trek movies, which is the evil mustache-twirling villain who wants to get revenge/blow up the earth/blow up the Enterprise. The ST series' told so many types of stories, action, sci-fi, parables, etc. It's time the ST movies grow up and stop figuratively remaking Wrath of Khan with EVERY FREAKING INSTALLMENT. Oh hell, I heard they are indeed
Spoiler:
literally re-making Wrath of Khan for part 2.
Fucky.

Iron Man- I'm not a comic book fan. Never read one in my life, in fact. But this movie was damn fun. And far far better than those grim Nolan snorefests.

The Hangover- Not a "great" movie, but just so damn funny.

Smiley Face- This is really here just for Anna Faris' performance. The chick is a virtuoso comic actress and this is her tour de force. She should do a stage version of this and stick it on Broadway.

Re: 5 favorite movies, of the last 5 years?

The ones that I've enjoyed and re-watched the most, narrowed down from a list of 12:

1. Happy-Go-Lucky
2. The Diving Bell and the Butterfly
3. Fantastic Mr. Fox
4. Paranoid Park
5. Lorna's Silence

I can't quite rank "No One Knows About Persian Cats" with these, but I do want to give it some kudos here - it is a bit rushed (as one would expect, since it was shot in secret over the course of a few weeks), but it's also one of the more vital and energetic films I've seen in a long time. It has an incredible sense of urgency - it hit me quite powerfully the first time I watched it, and it retains most of that power over repeat viewings. Plus, some of the music is actually pretty enjoyable (even if I wouldn't listen to most of it outside of the film.) It does one of the things cinema does best - it shows you a world you wouldn't expect to see (or even think exists), and makes you care about the (rather brave) people in that world.

The last five Pokemon movies.
Let's see if I can even remember the titles:
POKEMON: ARCEUS AND THE JEWEL OF LIFE
POKEMON: GIRATINA AND THE SKY WARRIOR
POKEMON: THE RISE OF DARKRAI
POKEMON: DIALGA VS. PALKIA VS. DARKRAI
POKEMON RANGER AND THE TEMPLE OF THE SEA

(okay, okay, so I had to look up the last two)

Re: 5 favorite movies, of the last 5 years?

Nankyoku ryôrinin (The Chef of South Polar)
L'arnacoeur (Heartbreaker)
Sit yan fung wan (Overheard)
In Bruges
My Blueberry Nights

When I choose "best", I tend to go with the dark and dramatic. When I think "favorite", I tend to choose lighter fare.
