Hurricane Irene Blows Away the Competition: Weekend Box Office 8/26 - 8/28
Too soon of a topic title?
Hollywood doesn't care as they're throwing hissy fits that a natural disaster that could cost many their lives or belongings is losing them money. Or they put how shitty films this weekend again. Or both...

FRIDAY: I’ve just learned that AMC which operates the Empire 25 in NYC’s Times Square — the top grossing theater in the country — is closing all New Jersey theaters Saturday at 6:00 PM for the weekend as well as a bunch in states like New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and North Carolina. Regal is leaving it up to individual managers to make the call unless otherwise instructed by local authorities but Hollywood distributors expect them to follow suit. Clearview Cinemas already announced all theaters are closed for Saturday and Sunday. “Out of concern for the safety of our guests and staff, all Clearview Cinemas will be closed on Saturday August 27 and Sunday August 28. We plan to reopen on Monday August 29. Wishing you and your family a very safe weekend,” read a statement on the circuit’s website.

Save The Help & Apes, there's a whole lot of bombing going on thee last few weekends.
Don't Be Afraid of the Dark was very low budget so I guess it's not really a bomb, but that number still looks bad.
Now Conan & Fright Night, they really stunk it up.

Pretty weak weekend. I might go see Dark at some point, but I don't think even sunny skies would've helped this crop of crap out.

I just got back from the movies and the theaters were pretty empty. The storm hasn't really hit here yet, so I'm assuming everybody is flooding the grocery stores to get their last minute stuff.

When I first read the bolded part, I thought you were suggesting an alternate title for the thread.

Isn't the end of August/early September pretty much ALWAYS a dead time at the box office every year?

Those Conan numbers are brutal. It looks like it may not even make 25 million domestically.

I agree. I was actually talking to my wife about this yesterday. You've got Final Destination 5, Fright Night, Don't Be Afraid of the Dark, Apollo 18 and Shark Night all opening well before Halloween. Looking at the schedule, the only horror title coming out around Halloween is Paranormal Activity 3. Kind of odd to see so much stuff just dumped way before what seems to be the perfect time for it.

I'm pretty sure movie theaters were closed in New York all weekend.

I still don't know how they didn't release Shark Night the Friday before the kick off of Shark Week. Who the fuck is running these studios marketing teams? And is Paranormal Activity 3 really a big threat? I sure as fuck am not going to see it until it hits cable.

I wonder if the studios are afraid there isn't room for another horror movie during that period.

I wonder if we'll see a bigger-than-expected Sunday and Monday night, as East Coasters may be tired of being cooped up for so long.

I can't believe Our Idiot Brother's budget was only $5 million. That seems obscenely low for a movie with that cast.

Sorry to see that Our Idiot Brother did so poorly. Funny, because everyone I know (almost) mentioned to me that they planned to see it. Maybe only my friends ended up going.
I've read pretty good things about it too and my wife and I planned to see it on its 2nd weekend of release. Now that it's coming out on Blu in November, we might see something else but it matters if there's anything else coming out next weekend that looks good.
Nothing out now that we haven't seen would make us change our plans to see Our Idiot Brother.
I only saw Paul Rudd promote this on tv, with such a good cast, that did surprise me.
