Hellraiser Revelations

Doesn't look too good, two weeks, $300,000 budget. I don't know why they even bothered. I was hoping the inevitable sequel was going to be mainstream, not limited, and jump-start the franchise.

Clive Barker Not a Fan (in ANY Capacity) of the Latest Hellraiser
Posted 08.24.11 by Ryan

For those keeping a close eye on the Hellraiser franchise, The Weinstein Company is releasing the ninth installment (Hellraiser: Revelations) this September in limited release.

Like many sequels, Revelations was made with the best of intentions. Dimension, The Weinstein Company's horror subsidiary, was faced with losing the Hellraiser rights, thereby jeopardizing their long-planned remake of the 1987 original. Rather than let the rights expire, the studio gave director Victor García (Return to House on Haunted Hill) two weeks and $300,000 dollars to make something out of Gary Tunnicliffe's script.

Rushing to production has its disadvantages, as Doug Bradley, the actor behind franchise villain Pinhead is sitting out for the first time. Instead, Stephan Smith Collins has the unenviable task of playing the iconic role.

Bradley's absence is sure to upset the fans that have stuck around this long. Count Clive Barker among them. Barker, who adapted the first Hellraiser from his novella The Hellbound Heart and also directed the movie, let fans know via Twitter that he was not involved with Revelations.

Hello, my friends. I want to put on record that the flic [sic] out there using the word Hellraiser is no f**kin’ child of mine. I have nothing to do with the f**kin’ thing. If they claim its from the mind of Clive Barker, it’s a lie. It’s not even from my butt-hole.
Barker was likely reacting to the first trailer for Revelations, which Bloody-Disgusting released last week. Watch it and see if Barker's anger is justified.

I've heard reports from a few friends that this is as insufferable as you can get. That's saying a lot if you've seen any Hellraiser movies past Bloodlines.

It sounds like a disaster. This series deserves a good movie. It has been a long time since there has been one.

Would it have cost more than 300 grand to renew the rights?

damn...that's a pretty shitty looking film.

Since they decided to make this shitty film, I'm going to say yes.

I'm surprised they didn't just film five minutes of new Pinhead footage and shove it into some unreleased film they already had in the can. Considering some of the previous sequels were existing unrelated scripts that were rewritten to shoehorn in Pinhead and qualify them as 'Hellraiser' films, this would have been the next logical step and the cheaper way to go. And sadly, that would have probably resulted in a somewhat better movie. :)

I love the concept of the Hellraiser, but the first movie is the only one that holds up. I have a soft spot for part two, and there are scenes from the later films that are cool, but as a whole? Hellraiser is kind of an awful franchise. Doug Bradley is amazing though.

I actually look forward to the remake, re-imagining, re-whatever the later Hellraiser movie is going to be.

I've never seen a Hellraiser film. I tried to as a kid but got bored. I think I need to watch Hellraiser, the original. Is that out on BD, any features?

Yes and yes. Buy it, you fool!

I've managed to watch the whole series, becoming more and more difficult with each movie. This one looks like an abomination, something a couple of college kids would film, and it doesn't even have the ability to say Bradley is there.

No thanks.

I read that the only reason this film was made was so the studio could hold onto the Hellraiser rights.

Hellraiser is possibly my favorite horror film of all time. Clive Barker is certainly my favorite horror writer. The series deserves so much more respect than it's gotten since the second film (arguably the third) film. The new series of comics is pretty good, though. I will not be seeing this one, especially if Doug Bradley isn't playing Pinhead.

Dimension has also apparently done this with Children of the Corn as well. It's called COTC: Genesis and hits dvd this coming Tuesday.

According to Amazon, this flick hits dvd on October 18th.

Even though both look awful, I'm a glutton for punishment and will probably see both.

The Anchor Bay Blu-ray can usually be had for dirt cheap, too. I think I've seen it as low as $5.99 or so.

I notice the first one is being re-released by Image. Does anyone know if there will any new extras or perhaps a new transfer?

Yeah, I don't really follow horror films, but I like Hellraiser (loved Ashley Laurence in this) and think it is pretty underrated, compared to the more popular horror films. So I'm still following the franchise.

Doug Bradley is great, but I think it is time for a reboot with a new pinhead.

I didn't read the article in full because I follow Barker on twitter and this story is kind of five days old.

I didn't have a chance to actually see the trailer until now because I was at work, but that really looks awful. It's one thing for a movie to have a low budget, it's another thing when it looks like it has a low budget. It totally looks like what it is: a cheap rush job.

Oh, I also noticed that the OP left out the last paragraph of that article, which talked a bit about the plans for the other movie:

As for the Hellraiser remake, screenwriter Todd Farmer and director Patrick Lussier (Drive Angry, My Bloody Valentine 3D) were hired last October, with Lussier revealing in February that the pair wouldn't be remaking the original movie. Instead, their Hellraiser would "play within the world that [Barker] created" and stay "within the world of the box" that opens up the gates to Hell. That has to sound better to Hellraiser fans.

Hellraiser securely holds a place on my "top ten horror films of all-time" list.

Everything else in the series is entirely disposable. I have no interest in seeing this latest abomination.
