The only positive I can note is that at least all five films were actually shot in 3D, but you can blame Marvel, Paramount and Warner for their onslaught of post-converts that turned everyone off.

It also doesn't help that...

Final Destination 5, despite being the best reviewed critically in the franchise, is coming off the heels as what is recognized as the worst entry in the franchise.

Spy Kids 4 is eight years too late. The kids who grew up with the original trilogy are probably teenagers... so they don't give a shit and they (hopefully don't) have kids they can take to the outing.

Conan and Fright Night have built-in (cult) audiences that don't want to see a remake (Fright Night) or can't imagine anyone else in the role besides a specific governor (Conan).

Glee. Well, fuck Glee.
I actually like that when you look at the numbers per screen, Fright Night did worse then Glee (8 million bucks on 3100 screens versus 5 million bucks on 2100 screens)

Your buddy was wrong Fright Night was SHOT in 3D and was really effective IMO. With shitty projection happening all over the place, I'm sure it's more of an issue with WHERE your friend saw the movie, rather than the 3D itself. The movie was dark but for the most part, I thought the 3D was really good.

Conan on the other hand WAS a conversion and looked like complete shit - barely any 3D effect noticable during 90% of the film and the 10% where you could see depth, was nothing to write home about.

Apparently everyone was at the beach cause it was crowded as fuck at the beaches this weekend. The weather was perfect for it though.

The production budget for Conan was $90 million. I don't think we'll see a follow-up anytime soon.

11 7 Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 WB $4,405,000 -39.3% 1,738 -676 $2,535 $365,901,000
12 6 Cowboys & Aliens Uni. $4,194,000 -46.3% 2,213 -1,097 $1,895 $89,476,000
13 8 Captain America: The First Avenger Par. $4,100,000 -43.1% 1,988 -847 $2,062 $164,732,000
14 10 The Change-Up Uni. $2,874,000 -54.4% 1,633 -1,280 $1,760 $32,019,000
15 11 Glee The 3D Concert Movie Fox $1,825,000 -69.4% 1,982 -58 $921 $10,464,000
16 12 Horrible Bosses WB (NL) $1,320,000 -45.9% 755 -583 $1,748 $112,616,000
Looks like Cap will end up with about $170 mil.

I don't understand how someone could possibly okay $90 million dollars to Nispel.

Might have helped if they had made an attempt at promoting that David Tennant was in it. You'd never guess it from the trailers. He's probably got the biggest fanbase out of the cast.

I have no idea who that even is. Looking him up, I guess he would be most well known for Doctor Who. I'm going to guess that wouldn't have done a thing for the box office.

In the states, I do not think most people would be able to pick David Tennant out of a line up even if he was standing by the tardis and wearing a name tag.

at thinking a Dr Who actor in trailers would boost US ticket sales.

Count me in the group who has no idea who David Tennant is. Only Dr Who's I've seen is the Tom Baker one & the one that later went on to play Destro (don't even know his name offhand)

wow it looks like summer is really coming to a close when it comes to movies coming out. It always seems like there's that 1 surprise hit that comes out in Aug every year, but I don't really see anything fitting that bill coming this year.

I wouldn't label it as a surprise, but I don't think everyone expected Planet of the Apes to be doing as well as it has.

Studios still think a good "look" can sell a movie.

Re: The Weekend Where Nobody Goes to the Movies: Weekend Box Office 8/19 - 8/21

I knew a new Conan was being made. I had no idea it was coming out this year. I'm guessing studios positioned it as the last-gasp of summer August action movie. Having not seen a single trailer or anything at all, I can't guess as to why it flopped.

I did, however, see a trailer for Spy Kids 4 playing on a TV outside the theater. I cannot say that I have ever seen a movie that looks quite so terrible. And I say this as someone who took kids to the first movie.

No name actors in the Conan cast. And how many moviegoers under 35 have even HEARD of Conan the Barbarian? The Schwarzenegger movies came out 29 and 27 years ago. Nor did the moviemakers make much of an effort to make the film attractive to older moviegoers who are already fans of Conan. So it was doomed from the start.

Reminds me of the genius strategy behind DRAGONBALL EVOLUTION where they made every effort to thoroughly alienate people who were already fans of Dragon Ball, while doing nothing to entice people who'd never heard of Dragon Ball.

I dunno...a lot of guys and some gals have seen or heard of the character...cuz of the Arnold flick. Those in my age range (who aren't film related people) either were bitching that they'd dare tread the ground that Arnold did or just thought it looked stupid...or both.

Maybe it is the perspective, but it looks like he needs to have a finger like ET's to cover the distance between grip and trigger.
