Higher Ground (8/26/11, Vera Farmiga's directorial debut)

Vera Farmiga's directorial debut, HIGHER GROUND, depicts the landscape of a tight-knit spiritual community thrown off-kilter when one of their own begins to question her faith. Inspired by screenwriter Carolyn S. Briggs' memoir, This Dark World, the film tells the story of a thoughtful woman's struggles with belief, love, and trust—in human relationships as well as in God.

That synopsis alone turned me right the fuck off. Not even going to click on the trailer.

Really? You guys won't give a movie a chance just based on premise? I'm atheist and all I want is a good movie. Which seems to be like this may be.

This movie would have to be hovering around 100% and get nominated for a few Oscars before I'd consider seeing it.

I saw the synopsis, and then I clicked on the trailer and watched it.

This movie actually looks pretty interesting. I'm not going to rush out to theaters but I'll check it out on Netflix eventually. I too am an atheist and religious movies don't bother me as long as they don't dumb everything down, I'm looking at you Kirk Cameron.

This looks interesting, but what was with the critic calling Farmiga "our generation's (Meryl) Streep?" I think I would pick Kate Winslet for that title.

I think I'd call this generation's Meryl Streep, Meryl Streep.
