You're completely incorrect. It doesn't matter how many years are between sequels.

Answer - never.
You can thank the trend of splitting a single movie into multiple movies for that confusion.

Just remember it takes place before Alien and pretends none of the other sequels existed...

That's because Ridley Scott is developing six more films to fill in the gaps. We'll get sequels, prequels and a prequel of the sequel.

Which version of the original would you recommend that I show my sons before we see the new one? They've never seen the original. Does the narration in the theatrical cut make it easier for first time watchers to follow? Will the additional scenes in the final cut be relevant to what happens in the sequel?

final cut and then watch the 3-short films on YouTube that lead into 2049. The third one premieres next week.

The Final Cut is the ultimate version of the movie. There's an opening crawl that sets the stage sufficiently.

How old are your sons? The Final Cut is the best version of the film. The narration is redundant/unnecessary information, but if your sons are very young, it might make it more accessible for them. However, my first viewing of the film was as a teen with the "Director's Cut," with no narration, and I understood it fine. The plot isn't that complex.

There's really only one "additional scene" in the Final Cut/Director's cut, and it's unknown if it will have any significance on the sequel, because little is known about the sequel's story at the moment. Someone can probably answer this better once the sequel is released.

My sons are 18 and 16. I saw the original in the theater when I was 11. I don't recall how much background info the narration gives that can't be figured out in the director's/final cut, but it sounds like the final cut should be the one to go with.

About the only background info in the narration that's not in the film itself is the fact that Deckard has an ex-wife and the name of the language Gaff speaks (Cityspeak).

I found a video that compiles all the narration:

I think that's the first time I've heard all the narration, and OH BOY is some of it bad. It's like "why don't we make all the subtext just text?" and stuck it in Deckard's mouth.

Also found a transcript of the theatrical cut if you want to check for context:

Dangerous Days shows some funny moments of Ford recording the narrarations. Even he thought they were so bad he kept laughing during the recordings.

I read the article weeks ago where it was stated that it's really not a sequel. So I went along with that. I wish I could remember where I read it. I been searching around to find it to no avail but I can't give up.

Crunchyroll has the anime short Blade Runner Black Out 2022 up:
http://www.crunchyroll.com/blade-run...ut-2022-748417

They're only offering the 480p version for free. Try to get a higher resolution and they take you to their signup page.

Someone's uploaded it to Youtube:

Re: Blade Runner 2049 (2017, D: Villeneuve) S: Ford, Gosling

A few theaters look to be running a double feature of Blade Runner and Blade Runner 2049 on opening night:
https://www.regmovies.com/promotions...double-feature
https://www.cinemark.com/blade-runner-double-feature
https://celebrationcinema.com/movie/...ture/10-5-2017

It'd be interesting if they sandwiched the shorts in between the films.

Sorry for pulling an Oldboy... How many shorts are there? And what order are we meant to watch them in? Thanks! I'm seeing this next Thursday.

There are three shorts. Their titles are, in order of release:

2036: Nexus Dawn
2048: Nowhere to Run
Black Out 2022

The dates in the title refer to the year the short takes place, so they were released non-chronologically. Having watched them all, I think you could re-order them and watch them chronologically if you wanted without any issues, although in the release order, they saved the best for last.
