That wasn't exactly what I meant, but ... Yes.

To me they are similar to Donnie Darko ... The Director's Cuts force specific definitions on the audience instead of letting the audience interpret the film(s). To me, letting the audience find meaning is the right path.

This is another reason I am coming to the belief that Blade Runner and Alien were excellent films in spite of Ridley Scott, not necessarily because of him.

Blade Runner and Alien would not be anywhere as good without Scott. He has always had an amazing eye in how to light and film a scene.

Bullshit. You don't accidentally direct masterpieces.

I did not say it was accidental and I didn't necessarily say they would be better films WITHOUT him ... I said they are the films they are IN SPITE of him not BECAUSE of him.

You cannot argue that Scott's indelible fingerprints didn't make those movies better. What I am saying is that Scott needs to be kept in check for that to happen. If he were given complete reign we would have ... well, Prometheus -- the Phantom Menace of the Alien world.

He is a master visionary. He is a shitty-ass story teller and needs others to prop him up in that department. There is nothing wrong with that as long as you admit it. My issue is claiming he is some kind of film god when he is more like a cerebral Michael Bay. Yeah, I said it.

No, those films are good because of him, although not just because of him. You have to factor in the scripts and all the other collaborators and challenges of those films.

It's clear that he's not a director that can single-handedly save a film from a bad script, and he can make a bad movie. But that doesn't diminish his contributions to some genuine classic films.

With a good script, a good director can produce a masterpiece. With the same script, a mediocre director can produce a passable film.
But with a bad script even a good director can’t possibly make a good film.
- Akira Kurosawa

A lot of people embrace the auteur theory, but it's difficult to know what someone means by it.
I suppose they mean that the responsibility for the film rests solely on the shoulders of the director.
But very often the director is no better than his script.

Fab, bad Joker does another bad guy. And for the life of me, I have no idea why they wouldn't ask Vangelis to do the score. Would seem like one of the few highlights in what looks to be another run of the mill sequel.

The composer, Jóhann Jóhannsson, has worked with the director, Denis Villeneuve, on 3 of his previous films, so it may just be Villeneuve's comfortable working with the composer.

Jóhannsson claims to be a fan of the original soundtrack:

Obviously, Vangelis’ music played a huge part in creating that world, and Vangelis’ score to Blade Runner is one of my all-time favorites. It was a huge part of why that film is so strong, so yes, it’s something that I’m very aware of, but as I said, this is a sequel, not a remake, so we’re doing something that exists in the world but is new as well.

Re: Blade Runner 2049 (2017, D: Villeneuve) S: Ford, Gosling

Looks and sounds amazing. And the fact that they're not forcing Ford to be an aged BladeRunner running around and doing stuff makes me think they've got a good idea for a story.

Even if it ends up being "meh", it will still be a great flick to put on and just enjoy the scenery.

1982: Blade Runner gets bad reviews.

2017: Blade Runner 2049 gets bad reviews for not being as good as the original classic.

Re: Blade Runner 2049 (2017, D: Villeneuve) S: Ford, Gosling

I am not a Blade Runner fanboy, far from it in fact (my brother considers it a beloved film, and I believe that the first time I saw it all the way through was in a class at UC Santa Cruz), but I thought this trailer was great and makes me want to see the film in a theater.

Looks good to me as someone who also isn't a huge fan or anything of the original.

The beginning looks like Tron.

Looks good though I'm not super enthusiastic but I don't mind they made a sequel. Hope it turns out to be good.

Not really impressed by the trailer (or the co-executive producer) but the fact that this is directed by the same guy who made
Arrival, Sicario, Prisoners, Enemy & Incendies still has me interested.

Re: Blade Runner 2049 (2017, D: Villeneuve) S: Ford, Gosling

meh. Even at his age, Harrison Ford still commands your attention and is who you want this movie to be about. Every scene he is not in is likely going to feel like 3rd rate filler until he's back on screen. It's how I felt about The Force Awakens.
