Other than The Godfather Pt. II, Bride of Frankenstein, and Return of the Jedi, has there ever been a truly great sequel to a genre-defining movie?
When I hear "sequel", I think of Matrix Reloaded, Jaws II, Exorcist II: The Heretic, Psycho II, and made for TV movies like Scarlett and The Last Days of Patton.

The Good the Bad the Ugly, The Raid 2.

GBU isn't really a "sequel" in the conventional sense. It's nominally part of a series of films, but has no connection to the previous two beyond the presence of two actors and an item of clothing.
The Empire Strikes Back, you mean. Not Return of the Jedi .

I love the random career resurgences of Robin Wright and Jennifer Jason Leigh.

Still curious as to why they're releasing this in January unless there will be a limited release in December.

Realistically, this could make HUGE bank and be better than the first and it still wouldn't get that many nominations. Maybe a few like costume design, production design and visual effects. But none of the main categories.
I think Mad Max: Fury Road was the exception to the rule for this kind of movie. The awards shows will probably care about Blade Runner 2 as much as they cared about Tron Legacy.

More like January is typically the dumping ground for movies studios don't think are any good and/or make much money. The exception are the "prestige" pictures that have a limited release in Dec and then expand in Jan.

Looks like Drax is joining the cast. If we're lucky, he'll play Drax. Might as well at this point. He posted this on his Facebook page.

Mackenzie Davis, the actress who appeared in The Martian and also stars in Halt and Catch Fire, has joined the cast of Alcon Entertainment’s sequel to Blade Runner.
The actress will now join Ryan Gosling and Harrison Ford in the sci-fi project, being directed by Denis Villeneuve, the acclaimed filmmaker behind drug drama Sicario. The roll call also includes Dave Bautista, Ana de Armas, Carla Juri and Robin Wright.
Plot details are being kept under wraps but it is known that the story takes place several decades after the conclusion of the 1982 original and that Ford is reprising his role as replicant hunter Rick Deckard.
Hampton Fancher (co-writer of the original) and Michael Green wrote the new screenplay based on an idea by Fancher and Ridley Scott.
Principal photography is scheduled to begin in July with Warner Bros. distributing in North America and Sony Pictures Releasing International handling the rest of the world.
The role is a get for Davis, the Canadian actress who’s skewed more toward indie fare — her feature debut was Breathe In with Guy Pearce and then she starred in the alcoholism drama Smashed from James Ponsoldt (The Spectacular Now, The End of the Tour), with most of her work being in that field.
She does star in Catch Fire, AMC’s 1980s tech drama that also features Lee Pace and Scoot McNairy.
Davis is repped by UTA,

‘Walking Dead’ Actor Lennie James Joins ‘Blade Runner’ Sequel
Justin Kroll:Film Reporter @krolljvar
JULY 26, 2016 | 10:24AM PT
“The Walking Dead” actor Lennie James is in negotiations to join the “Blade Runner” sequel starring Harrison Ford and Ryan Gosling.
Directed by “Sicario” helmer Denis Villeneuve, the film also stars Robin Wright and Mackenzie Davis. Cinematographer Roger Deakins will reunite with Villeneuve on the project.
The sequel, set several decades after the original, is written by Hampton Fancher and Michael Green, and succeeds the initial story by Fancher and David Peoples, based on Philip K. Dick’s novel “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep.” Plot details are still under wraps.
The movie hits theaters on Oct. 6, 2017.
Warner Bros. is handling domestic distribution, while Sony is taking on international distribution.
Alcon Entertainment acquired the film, television and ancillary franchise rights to “Blade Runner” in 2011 from the late producer Bud Yorkin and Cynthia Sikes Yorkin to produce prequels and sequels to the iconic sci-fi thriller. Cynthia Sikes Yorkin will produce along with Broderick Johnson and Andrew Kosove. Bud Yorkin will receive a producer credit.
Ridley Scott will serve as executive producer. Frank Giustra and Tim Gamble, CEOs of Thunderbird Films, will also executive produce along with Bill Carraro.
James is best known as Morgan on AMC’s hit zombie drama “The Walking Dead.” On the film side, he most recently portrayed James Brown’s father, Joseph Gardner Brown, in the biopic “Get on Up.”
James is repped by UTA, Independent Talent Group and the Lasher Group.

Two things I didn't like there:
1) set several decades after the original
2) acquired the rights ... to produce sequels and prequels
Other than that, I like how the cast is shaping up!

I'm stoked. Both the new Star Wars and Star Trek were very enjoyable so maybe they'll stay on a roll here.
