Movies where the theme is "Fear is self-destructive"

I'm teaching a class and wanted to show films where the theme is that fear is self destructive and where the characters turn on each other due to fear.

I was thinking of "the thing" anyone know any others?

The Thing (1982)

Edit: Clearly I couldn't be bothered to read your lengthy OP, so I'll also add Day of the Dead (1985).

Hm, this is an interesting question. It made me realize that I never really think about movies having themes, or trying to show something about the way life is. To me they're mostly a bunch of interesting (hopefully) stuff that happens.

Sometimes I suppose things resonate with me, but that's because it's something you already know on some level. Can't remember actually being taught something by a piece of fiction.

Dune, obviously. "Fear is the mind killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration."

Seriously though, The Conversation has an overall theme of trust and fear. The main character essentially destroys himself (as well as his apartment) out of fear and paranoia.

Solaris (I'm referencing the new one specifically) also has some issues of trusting others as well as one's self. Trusting one's memories as well as reality itself.

"Fear is the path to the dark side of the force. Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering..."

Nobody has brought up "Defending Your Life" yet? That movie actually comes right out and says it.

Fear is destructive, not self-destructive.

The OP is in Sydney. So it wouldn't be "our" kids. It would be Australian kids... and who cares about them?

No offense OP...

Forbidden Planet, isn't the mosnter just a projection of the crew's own fears? or something to that effect?
