Re: The 30 best directors working today, do you agree?

I would move Clint down quite a few notches, remove Ron Howard, Spike Lee, and Baz Luhrmann.

Some of the older directors that haven't done anything worthwhile in ages would also get knocked down and replaced with people like Todd Field, Alfonso Cuarón, Pedro Almodóvar, Steven Soderbergh, David Cronenberg, Terrence Malick, possibly Alejandro González Iñárritu, Spike Jonze, Gus Van Sant, and Mike Leigh.

Re: The 30 best directors working today, do you agree?

I don't think Ron Howard belongs. I don't dislike him, but I don't think he makes the cut when some better directors are missing. Personally I think Wes Anderson is overrated, but I know I'm in the minority on that one.

I agree with dropping some of the directors that haven't done anything great in a while (Zemeckis for starters). It's like putting Jack Nicholson high on a best current actors list.

Re: The 30 best directors working today, do you agree?

I don't think there are even three good directors working today, let alone 30. John Woo, Quentin Tarantino, and Hayao Miyazaki, maybe. But Miyazaki hasn't done a truly great film since PRINCESS MONONOKE in 1997. The other two have had decent films in the last three years (Woo's RED CLIFF and Tarantino's INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS), but who knows what their next will be like. Both are capable of complete duds.

Hopefully whoever compiled this list don't even consider them to be directors.

the people in blue would be on my top 30 list.

the people in purple wouldn't be on my top 30 list because although they were once good directors, they haven't produced good work in at least 10 years or in some cases decades.

the people in orange are good directors, but wouldn't make the top 30 cut.

the people in red are terrible directors who make shit movies and have no business being within a mile of a"best director" list.

the people not highlighted I have no opinion of.

Re: The 30 best directors working today, do you agree?

Would anybody be willing to dig up some clips of what you feel makes some of these directors stand out? I'm not familiar with some of them or their work. I always hear people complaining about directors saying they are hacks and shouldn't be in Hollywood, but it's always hyperbole without any evidence. I'd really like some substantive examples of why some are held in such low esteem, while others are regarded so highly.

Re: The 30 best directors working today, do you agree?

So is this just some random guy on imdb with a list of their 30 favorite directors? With the inclusive of Spike Lee, Baz Luherman, Robert Zemeckis, and Zack Snyder, I have to say this is worse than the EW one (which also included Spike Lee)

http://forum.dvdtalk.com/movie-talk/...directors.html

I thought of her, since Ratcatcher was a rivetting debut, but not having directed much since then ... eh? disappointing to say the least.

The list is just one person's opinion...and not a very good one at that.

Re: The 30 best directors working today, do you agree?

Quentin Tarantino moved WAY up
Nope! Moved way down. Tarantino is one of the more overrated directors, along with Cameron. Tarantino is not a bad director, but I don't see him anywhere near where his fanboys put him. He also doesn't have the body of work to be placed nearly that high. In the 17 years since Pulp Fiction, he has not come close to that level, or Resevoir Dogs for that matter. Zemeckis also moved way down. Remove Spike Lee and drop Oliver Stone down. I like Ridley Scott, but he can be dropped a few as well.

I'm not sure Brian DePalma should even be at 18. The man has made a few very good to maybe even great films. But he has made a staggering amount of shit, including Snake Eyes and Mission To Mars.

Terry Gilliam is also extremely hit and miss, especially over the last 15 years.

Definitely disagree with this. There is no director on that list that qualifies for red. Zemeckis, Howard, Lee, Luhrmann should be purple or orange at least according to your criteria. They have all been very good to great at certain times. How can you say those guys are terrible when they have directed some very good films. That is complete nonsense.
Luhrmann - Moulin Rouge
Lee - Do The Right Things, 25th Hour,Inside Man, Malcolm X
Howard - Frost/Nixon, A Beautiful Mind, Apollo 13, Cinderella Man
Zemeckis - Back To The Future, Castaway, Forrest Gump.

None of them should be classified as terrible directors who make shit movies.

So you are telling me Guillermo Del Toro, Michel Gondry, Danny Boyle, BRIAN DEPALMA(had to capitalize that one for extreme emphasis), Terry Gilliam are better director's than those 4. I don't think so.

The omission of Cronenberg alone is enough for me to dismiss this list.

James L. Brooks?
Zemeckis?

Re: The 30 best directors working today, do you agree?

There are some definite GLARING omissions, but honestly - Any list of directors that does not contain Zhang Yimou and Takashi Miike is completely fucking worthless. Yimou has directed several of the largest grossing films in the world, and Miike, while his work is admittedly not for everyone, has more latitude and style than every director on that list.

Total bullshit.

Re: The 30 best directors working today, do you agree?

Spike always gets shit-listed at this forum (Understandably so, whenever he opens his mouth) but I've never had problems with him as a director. Granted, his recent "Popcorn" films have *sucked, but at least he's been doing stellar work with his docs (4 Little Girls,When The Levees Broke)

*Though I admit that I'm partial to She Hate Me for obvious reasons:
