Tank Rhino looks more like a SpiderSlayer. This just isn't clicking.

Yeah, now that you mention it, I see it.

It makes me wonder why they didn't just use Spencer Smythe and his Spider-Slayer robots instead of completely redesigning Rhino in that way.

Rhino reminds me of Tom Noonan on roids.

Haven't we been over this time and time again?

It doesn't matter how popular a character is so long as the movie makes them interesting.

The general audience really didn't know a whole lot about any of the Avengers characters before the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Likewise with Ra's al Ghul and Scarecrow in Batman Begins.

Plus, I don't think Rhino was ever that popular in the first place. Ask random people to name 10 Spider-Man villains, and I bet very few of them would name Rhino.

You have. No one believes you.

BTW, people knew who Ra's and Scarecrow were. Rhino was known from the old SM cartoon that many of us grew up with.

Yeah Rhino is an odd choice to use if you ask me compared to some of the other Spider-Man villains. I always thought he was kind of lame both in how he looks and his abilities. I get that they're probably wanting to use some different villains than what the Raimi trilogy used but I could think of quite a few that I'd have rather seen. Mysterio, Kraven, Kingpin, Venom (done properly this time), or possibly Carnage. Electro I always found kind of lame too to be honest. He seems like one of those villains that would serve more as a side villain to one of the larger ones (which he may be I guess depending on Green Goblin's role in this).

Eh I love both characters but I think how mainstream they were prior to Batman Begins is debatable. Aside from the comics they were probably largely known to people who watched Batman: The Animated Series.

Every kid watched BM:TAS. It aired right before Power Rangers. I didn't even like it and I watched it as a kid. It was a timewaster before PR came on.

The big assumption you are making there is that everyone actually watches cartoons. They don't. Cartoons have the same stigma that comics do: most people think they're for children.

Also, a quick wikipedia search shows Spencer Smythe was in the cartoon as well. So your point about people knowing Rhino from the cartoon is invalid regardless. If people remember Rhino from the cartoon, they likely remember Smythe as well.

Citation needed.

I was a kid in the 90s. (Well a teenager really but still a kid.) I didn't watch B:TAS.

There you go. Newsflash, children watch cartoons. These movies are aimed at people from my generation. Not 40-year old men.

Also, Rhino was in far more episodes than whoever the f Spencer Smythe is.

But they know who Electro and Rhino are? C'mon. And people knew who Ra's al Ghul was before Batman Begins? There is no way you actually believe that. I was a comic book fan growing up and I barely knew anything. I bet if you asked people who'd seen all three Batman movies, many would be hard pressed to come up with Liam Neeson's character name. I watched plenty of B:TAS and don't remember him at all from there.

Spider-man's villains start and end with Green Goblin and Doctor Octopus for 99% of the population. Everyone else is as random as the next.

Maybe if you're retarded. I was actually intelligent as a child, so I could remember cartoon characters' names.

That's not a newsflash considering I already said cartoons have the "for children" stigma.

Also, I am not 40 yet. I am 34. I was born in 1979.

Is that hyperbole or do you really not know who Spencer Smythe is? I thought you were a hardcore comic nerd? Spencer Smythe isn't that obscure at all, and a comic nerd should definitely know who he is.

But the thing you are doing is making the general assumption that everyone is like you, and everyone watched and remembers the same cartoon.

As far as this movie is concerned, it doesn't matter if people know who these characters are from any source. It appears they will have so little resemblance to their counterparts in other mediums that all it would do is cause more confusion in those with a higher level of familiarity.

He also appeared prominently in the 90's cartoon and the Spider Slayers showed up quite a few times as well.

Yeah, if I didn't already know that was supposed to be Rhino and Electro, I don't think I would have ever guessed it on my own. I most likely would have thought Electro was the new Sith Lord for Episode VII.

And Rhino is a few jumbly parts shy of looking he might have exjected from Soundwave in one of the Bayformers flicks.

Right? If I didn't know that was supposed to be Rhino I wouldn't even think it was a person at all. Looks like some kind of vehicle or something. The sad part is Spidey himself is looking better than ever but I have a feeling this movie is going to suck.

re: The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014, Webb) S: Foxx and Friends

I recently rewatched the last one and still enjoy it despite a few issues. But this one seems like it's going to be Spider-Man 3 REDUX in the worst possible way.

I'm okay with setting up Green Goblin and Rhino and any other number of villains with cameos or name drops. But why have three villains in one shot? How are we to give a crap about Harry when he becomes the Green Goblin (or whatever they choose to call him) if it happens in the first movie we ever see him?
