Absolutely loved this film. Andy Serkis should win an oscar. And Franco wasn't as grating as I sometimes find him to be. I was expecting this to be a dumb action flick but for my money it's the best movie of the summer.

That's a pretty high percentage for such a CGI intensive movie.

I hate to admit not seeing the first ones (at least not since I was so young I can't really remember them). Should I seek those out first, or will I be fine going to this and watching those later?

I watched them all last week before seeing this and although I liked them overall (the two best being the original and the unrated Conquest), I felt it might've actually been a mild disservice because you become accustomed to how the apes look in the old movies, and then you have to force yourself to adjust to this.

If I stop being lazy and write it, my review will be up tomorrow. Short version: Movie's pretty good. Apes are great, and the CG is phenomenal -- there are scenes where a CG character emotes against a CG character that is also emoting and you just buy it. The humans are sort of useless, though (I imagine a version told from the perspective of Caesar, where the humans are all supporting), and there are two callbacks to the original...one strained, one fucking awful.

It would be hard for people to rush out fast enough, because it's so close to the start of the credits, but there is an extra thing.

Re: Rise of the Planet of the Apes (Wyatt, 2011) The Reviews Thread

Really liked this one - great pacing and top notch effects. Sure the humans are the least memorable part, Franco was fine but Brian Cox and Lithgow were pretty much wasted - not a dealbreaker since the apes are the real stars. Caeser felt like a real character and the rest of the apes were extremely well done. I loved the transformation from cute to cold and there were a few iconic moments that really made me want to cheer. I hope this makes enough cash for the sequel, because I'm interested to see where it goes from here. 4/5

Re: Rise of the Planet of the Apes (Wyatt, 2011) The Reviews Thread

The first three quarters of the film is abysmal, young Caesar is one of the worst cgi efforts ever, with a case of the cutes. What little action payoff we finally get is not worth the arduous task to get there. I am beside myself that people are liking this film. I very much agree with the review posted on dvdtalk by Jamie S Rich, with the exception I don't think the cgi works at all. Not once did I believe the apes were real.

I liked the score, it sounded very similar to Elfman's. I didn't like the revamped ape history, this is not the Planet of the Apes concept. This is Gremlins 3.

As much as I didn't like Burton's, I enjoyed it more than this attempt.

I'm dying for Gremlins 3, so that must be why I liked this one (and I did think it had a few 'Gremlins' moments, with the introduction of the gray and grizzled chimps)

I saw it this morning, and I saw several callbacks to th original. I thought this was the best movie value I've enjoyed all summer, and I loved Captain America.

I thought it was really well done. I liked the pacing, it didn't feel rushed nor slow either. The special effects were amazing, it should win the Oscar.

Congrats Rupert Wyatt, whoever you are, you made a solid film.

Re: Rise of the Planet of the Apes (Wyatt, 2011) The Reviews Thread

It was crap. Terrible writing, one cliche after another. One note characters, it was too long and there was only one action scene. Too easy. Too simplistic. I think they paid the critics, there's no way this is worth 80 % approval. Remember how useless the indian girl was in it? and Franco had nothing to do, he might as well have been played by Shia Labof.

The science within it, was on the level of made for the sci-fi channel. Even as science fiction it was bad. The alzheimer's dad was laughable. Andy Serkis overacted, such an expressive animated face doesn't mesh well with boring stone-jawed humans... lastly, I felt bad for the Harry Potter guy, are they really just gonna cast him as a d-bag in every movie? cmon..

Yikes. We had people clapping in our theater. I think the majority of the audience loved it.

Re: Rise of the Planet of the Apes (Wyatt, 2011) The Reviews Thread

I'm familiar with and a moderate fan of all the original movies, and unlike many, I loved Burton's version. I was a bit disappointed in Rise. I thought it was a bit too slow, and the action wasn't a big payoff.

I didn't think it was a terrible movie, and I thought they did a fantastic job with the CGI as far as facial expressions of the apes to give them depth of personality. Also, a good, creepy sense of the apes becoming sentient, powerful and menacing. I also give it credit for not getting too preachy, and not making the apes too heroic.

The downsides for me were:

Franco's performance was okay, but I didn't really buy him as a scientist.

As with most CGI, the apes just moved too fast in the action scenes. I didn't see anything in the plot that said they were super-powered apes, but that's the way they moved much of the time.

But, the big problem I had was:

Spoiler:
At the apehouse, I got the sense that there were maybe 30-40 apes that Ceasar made smart with the gas----then when they got to the bridge, there were like 200 apes. The ones they let out of the zoo weren't smart--they couldn't have followed orders. Also, I just didn't buy the fact that one policeman with an automatic weapon couldn't have killed about 20 apes by himself, instead of running away.

Not a terrible movie, but not great either, IMO. I do hope it does well enough that we get a sequel, though, as I think that could be more interesting.

Were the scenes that made the audience clap scenes which showed humans getting theirs by the apes?

Re: Rise of the Planet of the Apes (Wyatt, 2011) The Reviews Thread

There were more than a few homages or lifted elements from the first film, I'll let someone else post them, but I also think the movie contains the single worst piece of expository dialogue in a film-

Spoiler:
When Lithgow is in the car and the character screams (I'm paraphrasing, don't remember actual lines- "Hey That's my car! I'm a Pilot! How am I going to get to the airport?"
