Cowboys, Aliens and Smurfs Oh My!: Box Office 7/29-7/31

Boxoffice.com has early weekend estimates. Smurfs edged out Cowboys & Aliens on Friday and looks to take the weekend. I thought Captain America was going to have a better hold, so I'm surprised by the 60%+ drop.

1 The Smurfs $36,000,000 -- 3,395 -- $10,604 $36,000,000 1 Sony / Columbia
2 Cowboys & Aliens $35,500,000 -- 3,750 -- $9,467 $35,500,000 1 Universal
3 Captain America: The First Avenger $25,500,000 -61% 3,715 0 $6,864 $117,367,268 2 Paramount
4 Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part II $22,500,000 -53% 4,145 -230 $5,428 $319,034,509 3 Warner Bros.
5 Crazy, Stupid, Love $18,500,000 -- 3,020 -- $6,126 $18,500,000 1 Warner Bros.
6 Friends With Benefits $10,000,000 -46% 2,926 0 $3,418 $38,900,281 2 Sony / Screen Gems
7 Horrible Bosses $7,200,000 -39% 2,510 -594 $2,869 $96,301,552 4 Warner Bros. / New Line
8 Transformers: Dark of the Moon $6,000,000 -50% 2,604 -771 $2,304 $337,921,414 5 Paramount / DreamWorks
9 Zookeeper $4,200,000 -52% 2,418 -797 $1,737 $68,730,840 4 Sony / Columbia
10 Cars 2 $2,400,000 -58% 1,763 -905 $1,361 $182,169,548 6 Disney
11 Winnie the Pooh $1,800,000 -65% 1,632 -773 $1,103 $22,457,865 3 Disney

I'm not surprised in the least by Smurfs' success. People eat up stupid shit like that.

I am a little surprised Cap took such a hit. Hopefully it stablizes and manages to eke out at least $180m.

Horrible Bosses should cross $100m by next weekend. Great sign of future R-rated comedies to come.

I got a real Alvin and the Chipmunks vibe from The Smurfs...looks pretty terrible and crappy but you knew people were going to take their kids to it making it a hit.

Re: Cowboys, Aliens and Smurfs Oh My!: Box Office 7/29-7/31

I have to admit that I'm a bit disappointed that Captain America took such a drop this weekend. It stands right alongside X-Men: First Class as the better comic book flicks of the year. On a more positive note, it's nice to see that Horrible Bosses will cross the $100 million mark (and outgross the horrific Bad Teacher) within the next few days.

I'm not surprised Cowboys and Aliens isn't a hit, but I thought it would do better than a $35 million weekend and I thought Crazy, Stupid, Love would at least do over $20 million.

I think R-rated comedy is, and will be, the story of the summer. Between Bosses, The Hangover Part II, Bad Teacher, and of course Bridesmaids, R-rated comedy has a better hit ratio than the superhero films this summer.

I'm curious to see how The Change-Up will fair next weekend. It's pretty awful, but is certainly the raunchiest comedy of the summer, and truly earned it's R rating.

Not thrilled with the drop of Captain America. But hopefully it will stabilize in the next week. Best movie of the summer for me next to Fast Five.

Like I said before. The Smurfs are to Sony what Alvin and the Chipmunks are to Fox. At least...i'm assuming..in other words...it's going to be super shitty, kids will love it, it'll make a shit ton of cash, and then we'll get a sequel somehow.

I can't believe parents are taking their children to see The Smurfs when Tree Of Life is still playing.

The Smurfs beating Cowboys and Aliens is not even remotely surprising. In fact, I would have been shocked if it hadn't. It's Smurfs, and there's a lot of small children out there who begged mom and dad to take them to see it. Then again, Cowboys and Aliens was not good to say the least.

Not with Disney laughing all the way to the bank due to merchandising.

I also looked up the worldwide gross and they're almost at 400M. Heh.

Cars is the biggest selling toy line of the last 5 years, iirc. Even between movies. So that helps.

Re: Cowboys, Aliens and Smurfs Oh My!: Box Office 7/29-7/31

Cowboys and Aliens just seems too similiar in theme to Wild Wild West with Will Smith which flopped at the box office. People that remembered or seen that one were probably turned off by Cowboys and Aliens.

Captain America had too much new competition coming out for it not to drom 60% in week 2. CA's third weekend will likely be better than or very close to C&A's and Smurf's 2nd weekend grosses. I;m surprised Captain America wasn't released around the July 4th holiday week considering the character.

Paramount wasn't going to slash their own throats. Transformers 3 was not going to share space with another summer tentpole.

I don't think I'd consider Smurfs, and Cowboys & Aliens as major competition to Captain America. Smurfs shouldn't have had any affect, and Cowboys & Aliens is only going to bring in about $35 mil. Had it been something that opened to $80 mil, then I'd consider it being a major factor for why Captain America dropped.

I thought Cap would have held to around 50% or possibly less, but maybe folks are feeling comic book fatigue now.

It also looks like we probably won't find out who is #1 until the actual totals are in tomorrow afternoon. C&A and Smurfs are both estimating now at $36.2 million each.

Even though it may still wind up as the weekend leader, is it too early to call COWBOYS & ALIENS a flop? Those have to be REALLY disappointing numbers for Universal.

At $400 million worldwide and counting, plus gazillions in merchandising?

You WISH you could flop that badly.

I would have been interested to see how Cap would have done if it had opened the summer instead of Thor. There's no way Marvel could have known Osama's death was coming, but my guess is the prevailing "America, Fuck Yeah!" sentiment would have worked in its favor.

In only 17 days, Deathly Hallows Part 2 has now earned $1 billion worldwide. Transformers 3 is now up to $982 million.
