i'm flabergasted that Smurfs made that much opening weekend considering it looks like a blue pile of turd.

I'm not surprised in the least by Smurfs' success. People eat up stupid shit like that.
I am a little surprised Cap took such a hit. Hopefully it stablizes and manages to eke out at least $180m.
Horrible Bosses should cross $100m by next weekend. Great sign of future R-rated comedies to come.

I got a real Alvin and the Chipmunks vibe from The Smurfs...looks pretty terrible and crappy but you knew people were going to take their kids to it making it a hit.

I have to admit that I'm a bit disappointed that Captain America took such a drop this weekend. It stands right alongside X-Men: First Class as the better comic book flicks of the year. On a more positive note, it's nice to see that Horrible Bosses will cross the $100 million mark (and outgross the horrific Bad Teacher) within the next few days.
I'm not surprised Cowboys and Aliens isn't a hit, but I thought it would do better than a $35 million weekend and I thought Crazy, Stupid, Love would at least do over $20 million.

I'm curious to see how The Change-Up will fair next weekend. It's pretty awful, but is certainly the raunchiest comedy of the summer, and truly earned it's R rating.

Not thrilled with the drop of Captain America. But hopefully it will stabilize in the next week. Best movie of the summer for me next to Fast Five.

Like I said before. The Smurfs are to Sony what Alvin and the Chipmunks are to Fox. At least...i'm assuming..in other words...it's going to be super shitty, kids will love it, it'll make a shit ton of cash, and then we'll get a sequel somehow.

The Smurfs beating Cowboys and Aliens is not even remotely surprising. In fact, I would have been shocked if it hadn't. It's Smurfs, and there's a lot of small children out there who begged mom and dad to take them to see it. Then again, Cowboys and Aliens was not good to say the least.

I also looked up the worldwide gross and they're almost at 400M. Heh.
Cars is the biggest selling toy line of the last 5 years, iirc. Even between movies. So that helps.

Cowboys and Aliens just seems too similiar in theme to Wild Wild West with Will Smith which flopped at the box office. People that remembered or seen that one were probably turned off by Cowboys and Aliens.
Captain America had too much new competition coming out for it not to drom 60% in week 2. CA's third weekend will likely be better than or very close to C&A's and Smurf's 2nd weekend grosses. I;m surprised Captain America wasn't released around the July 4th holiday week considering the character.

I thought Cap would have held to around 50% or possibly less, but maybe folks are feeling comic book fatigue now.
It also looks like we probably won't find out who is #1 until the actual totals are in tomorrow afternoon. C&A and Smurfs are both estimating now at $36.2 million each.

Even though it may still wind up as the weekend leader, is it too early to call COWBOYS & ALIENS a flop? Those have to be REALLY disappointing numbers for Universal.

In only 17 days, Deathly Hallows Part 2 has now earned $1 billion worldwide. Transformers 3 is now up to $982 million.
