Battle: L.A. was a straightforward war flick masquerading as sci-fi. It didn't dwell on the aliens' master plan since the real focus was on the squadron. I also appreciate that the script trimmed all the fat that usually overwhelms these flicks. There was no shoehorned love story. The "mystery" of Nantz' backstory was resolved almost at the very beginning (instead of dragging it on throughout the rest of the picture). The big final speech amounted to "quit your bitching so we can get the job done and get the fuck outta here" which was a refreshing change from the typical "meaningful" speeches in these films that trigger my eyeroll reflex.
Battleship looks like a remake of Pearl Harbour with Armageddon mixed in but embracing the worst aspects of both. I wouldn't be surprised if the whole love story takes center stage along with the kid earning Liam Neeson's respect (who will most likely sacrifice himself in the kid's stead so that his daughter will be happy) while alien attack ends up being almost a subplot.

Why would anyone in their right mind give Peter Berg a $200 million budget to direct ANYTHING? His films are the very definition of mediocre... and with the exception of Hancock (which, let's face it, had more to do with the fact it was a Will Smith summer superheroey movie), generally bomb...
I guess he'll give the studio EXACTLY what they want.

It's always hard to say for sure, but I have a hard time believing I would have liked Hancock at all if somebody other than Will Smith got the role.
Speaking of Will Smith, I was shocked to discover that he hasn't starred in a movie since Seven Pounds back in 2008. According to IMDB, his next role is Men in Black 3, which I assume will be summer of 2012. By then it will be close to 4 years since he was last seen in a movie. I'm sure a movie like Men in Black takes a while to film so it's not like he's been sitting on the couch for 4 full years, but it's surprising to me that he'll go almost 4 years between movies. Is he not as bankable as he once was or has he just been taking time off lately?
Like I said, I like Will Smith. His movies aren't perfect but he's one of the few actors that can do a great job in a comedy, action movie or a drama and a romantic comedy as well. I actually thought he was outstanding in Seven Pounds.

I found Hancock mediocre but it was borderline brilliant compared to the spec script it spawned from (Tonight He Comes). I'll never understand what Michael Mann and others saw in that sack of shit script.
However, I did like The Rundown (tons of fun) and The Kingdom (nice to see a hostage that actually tries to escape rather than making a single halfhearted attempt). Never saw Friday Night Lights so I can't comment on that one.

Re: Bet you can't wait for a flim based on the Battleship board game starring Rihanna
I'll go out on a limb and predict that some people will see it and come here to post negative comments about it, causing several others to defend it by pointing out that the viewer should not have expected Citizen Kane.

I just saw this trailer on the big screen, it was still horrible, but I couldn't help but notice Brooklyn Deckers headlights where on their high beams at the beginning. I now look forward to watching this trailer over and over for the next year.

Peter Berg has turned into Michael Bay clone. His first movie was an entertaining, no holds barred black comedy.

And the amazing part is it was made for around $24 million.

Cool. As long as it's better than the Death Note flicks (way too much overacting) and as good as you say, I'll be sure to keep an eye out for a region free BD release.

He was the director of The Rundown, The Kingdom, and Hancock (not his best work). But lately it seems his body has become the vessel for a powerful demon called Michael Bay. Hence what you see in the trailer for Battleship.

BTW - The Yahoo versions of the trailer are either down, or my ISP is blocking them. Here's a YouTube link to the same thing in case the trouble is NOT just in my set:
