That's so weird. Roger Moore writes for the Orlando Sentinel and apparently some other company the Green Bay Press Gazette publishes. He uses the same reviews for both. Weird.

Extremely positive review:

http://thefilmstage.com/2011/07/20/r...first-avenger/

Recalling the serials that populated the time period it encapsulates, Joe Johnston’s Captain America: The First Avenger, the last in a long summer of superhero films, deals in absolute good and absolute evil in a world in which a first kiss is just as important as preventing a maniacal villain from blowing up the world.

Even after moving on from his roots as a visual effects artist for George Lucas and Steven Spielberg in the 1980s, Johnston has suffered a career full of what mostly feels like Spielberg-ian retreads (The Rocketeer, Jurassic Park III, Hidalgo). Here he shines, utilizing the never-ending resources provided by Marvel Studios to create something truly memorable.

UGO had this to say:

YOU WILL LIKE THIS IF... You love superheroes, war movies, period pieces and/or a good time.
YOU WON'T LIKE THIS IF... You’re a Nazi, a member of Hydra or you just plain hate America.
Grade: A

We're heading to Dallas Saturday morning, so I bought some tickets for the 11:20am showing at Studio Movie Grill to get some lunch at the same time. My kids should dig that since there aren't any theaters like that in the greater Tulsa area and the only one in OKC you have to be 21 to eat at.

^So the majority of the rest of the world is not going to like this?

A friend of mine who's seen the film says it's pretty good, but far from spectacular. I'm sort of getting this vibe from a lot of the buzz I've heard that doesn't originate from the fanboy community. I remain cautiously optimistic.

What if you think hating America is a good time?

The Captain America serial was awful, so if that's what this one brings to mind, I am soooo not there. And since when does anybody want to go back to the insipid world described in that last sentence? Well, maybe 12-year-olds, which would be this film's target audience if any of them had even heard of WWII.

I don't think that means the Captain America serial specifically, just serials of that time.

Yeah... they hated Green Lantern and that wasn't nearly as bad as they made it out to be. I never thought that either trailer made this look like a "can't miss" movie, but as a huge comic book guy, I was going to see it regardless. Guess we'll see...

It's now up to 60%. It'll be interesting to see what the final consensus is.

You're right. It was worse.

Still though it seems to be rising, so I hope as more reviews come in we get more positives.

Green Lantern had a 26% which was about right, I'd say maybe 1 in 4 people liked it. I was definitely in the other 74%.

I'm worried about most of the critics saying it's just one long trailer for The Avengers. I hope it's not that obvious.

I hope this is good. I don't think it looks like anything fantastic but it seems like it should be a fun time. I'm gonna try and go see it tonight. I've enjoyed the other offerings from Marvel so far this year, but I thought Green Lantern was an absolute disaster. The trailer for this gave me a better vibe than I got from Green Lantern though.

It can't be any more of a trailer for The Avengers than Thor, can it?

Obviously. That's the definition.

Also, it was tongue-in-cheek, Mr. Serious.

Oh I know, I just like to reference Ecks vs Sever as often as possible.
