Ebert says to go out of your way to "see it in 2-D".

Eh, it's playing at the theater with one great screen... I'm guessing that's going to be the 3D one...

Saw it yesterday in 3D but it was free. i will return for 2D. Great character arc. Chris Evans nails it. Surprised me. Loved the look of Hydra and really the whole film. Manchester made a great 40s Brooklyn to my eyes. Dum Dum Dugan was cool as he'll as were all the Howling Commandos. Let them have their own film! Maybe Howard Stark too! Captain America has been worth the wait this summer as the final comic book film.

I watched the Captain America marathon on SyFy yesterday (I had no idea there were three movies out there), so this one will have a hard time letting me down.

This was a boring, CGI-loaded, formula-following, cliche-riddled explosion show whose primary purpose was to attempt to sell me another crappy looking upcoming superhero movie.

Why do people keep expecting Citizen Kane from these superhero movies?

i think the RT consensus summary presumably sums it up best:
"With plenty of pulpy action, a pleasantly retro vibe, and a handful of fine performances, Captain America is solidly old-fashioned blockbuster entertainment."

You already mentioned him so your countdown is moot.

Why don't you put your review in this thread, and then just put the link to your page under your review in this thread. You could spoilerize it if it was big too...

I don't know why I would do that. What would be the advantage of doing that?

Well, he did raise the bar for these kinds of films. Maybe it's not so much comic book movie fatigue, but that everything pales in comparison to TDK.

Right, but that's the exception to the rule. Just because a movie or two excels, doesn't mean they all can or will.

For my money, X2 and even First Class have been amazing and on par with TDK. But I don't go into any of these movies expecting that. As long as I get an enjoyable two hours and some solid air conditioning for my $7, I'm happy.

Re: Captain America: The First Avenger (Johnston, 2011) The Reviews Thread

I really liked this. Had a fun and entertaining origin story and Chris Evans was a good choice to play Cap if you ask me. Also had some good action and the retro feel of the 40's setting was entertaining as well. Overall I guess I can't speak too much as to how true it was to the comics because I never read much of Captain America, but it seemed like they did a pretty good job of setting his character up if you ask me. Overall the Marvel movies have been really good this year while DC's one effort sucked big time. DC really needs to step it up if they plan on making more super hero movies and learn from what Marvel's doing because the Nolan Batman's aside their recent efforts stink.

Re: Captain America: The First Avenger (Johnston, 2011) The Reviews Thread

This movie was pretty damn dull. I like the nostalgia Johnston was trying to recreate but I don't think any of it worked. It just came off awkward. I didn't feel any emotion towards any of the characters.

Also, yes, unfortunately it did feel like it was trying to sell the The Avengers movie. The opening 5 minutes of the movie, I thought I was in the wrong theater. Seriously.

It didn't suck but that's about the best thing I can say.

Re: Captain America: The First Avenger (Johnston, 2011) The Reviews Thread

just got back from this and while not perfect i enjoyed it.

my main gripe was imo it felt uneven. while i enjoyed the backstory of how he became captain america it seemed like they took theyre time with that, but when it came down to the battle scenes it went by way too quickly

other that i enjoyed the choices or the roles, the humor was subtle and not forced compared to iron man 2 and for the fact i was a huge comic junkie as a kid but never read any avenger (group or solo) series and they have me anticipating next year's releases says something.

Re: Captain America: The First Avenger (Johnston, 2011) The Reviews Thread

I liked this movie a lot. Aside from the backstory of Rogers' dilemma or whatever...it was pretty solid. Neat little nod to the Torch at the Expo. Out of all the solo Avenger films...it's not IM1 but I'd say it's behind it. Liked the nods to the comics. Was kind of sad about not having enough face time for the HC.

The movie was almost as entertaining as the redneck fight that erupted in the middle of the theater that involved the cops being called. Movie = 4 stars. Fight = 5 stars.

Not a true redneck fight unless they came to the theater together.
