Pirates of the Carribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales (2017, Sandberg & Ronning) S: Depp

Johnny Depp 'Close' To Signing Up For Fifth Installment Of 'Pirates Of The Caribbean'

Johnny Depp clearly has a case of "Pirates" fever.

The actor is close to signing up for a fifth installment of the "Pirates of the Caribbean" franchise, a source told The Wrap.

Meetings with producer Jerry Bruckheimer are already taking place and a rough draft, which has been turned in, is being worked on, another source told the website.

While Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley both opted not to return for the fourth installment, which instead featured Penelope Cruz and rising star Sam Claflin, the movie took in a big booty at the box office.

According to Box Office Mojo, "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" has brought in a plunder of $234 million domestically and over $774 million worldwide for a whopping total of more than $1 billion.

Bruckheimer previously told the Associated Press a fifth film was in the works, which would carry on the story of Depp's character, Captain Jack Sparrow -- if the actor was willing to jump back on board.

"The audience told us what they loved about it is that it was fresh, it was new, it was a whole new story," Bruckheimer previously said of test screening audiences for the fourth film. "So that will carry over into the next one, too, to give it something fresh and different. As long as the audience embraces this one, we'll certainly try to make another one. It's really up to Johnny. He loves the character."

According to The Wrap, an agent for Depp declined commenting on the report, while a rep for Disney, the studio behind the film, did not respond to a request for comment.

Depp will next be seen in "The Rum Diary," where he plays a journalist working for a newspaper in the Caribbean.

This time they should get a real director. And a real screenwriter.

Now why would they do that when On Stranger Tides made $1B worldwide?

Why do these crap sequels make so much money?

And when you read something like - "The audience told us what they loved about it is that it was fresh, it was new, it was a whole new story." - it kind of ruins any hope of mine the next one will be better.

Depp is a whore. Does he really need another payday? Have some fucking self respect...man. -ohbfrank-

These films needs to go cease and desist. They are uniformly dreadful. The first movie was a contrived novelty and they've steadily gotten worse. Time to drive this franchise off a cliff.
Bloated, cringeworthy, leaden and badly written nonsense...utter pap.

Perhaps he just has fun making them?

Point taken, but did his performance in 'On Stanger Tides' not come across as an actor who was suffering from tired blood, going through the motions and completely "phoning it in"?

I'm sure he could have fun making any number of films.

Of course I'm quibbling, he can do whatever he wants and make a mint doing it. :)

I didn't think he was phoning it in at all.

I didn't think so either. I got the very distinct impression that he was having great fun with the character. But then, I don't agree with any of this type of comment at all, on any conceivable level:

I really enjoyed the latest film, enough to go see it twice in the theater.

Well that's not a shock Robo. You seem to like any film featuring a pirate, a robot or a shiny light.
-wink- :)

Pssst.. here's some advice. Don't see them if you don't like them. Apparently a lot of people do enjoy them. Go see something else.

Hell, with the money he's made, he could buy his own country. He has reportedly made $350 million on the four movies. Depp gets paid

Only 350 million?

But he's not doing this for money....he's only doing these movies because he has fun and loves Cap'n Jack. :)

I don't think his performance was as vibrant or surprising as it was before, but I think a lot of that was the fault of the screenplay which gave him nothing worth doing.

A more talented director could have taken the EXACT same "On stranger tides" screenplay and made a much more exciting and fun movie.

Rob Marshall sucked all the life out of OST

I'm starting to think Rob Marshall and Marc Foster are the same person. They both know how to make beautifully shot movies that have absolutely no life to them at all.

I read an article that Depp said he loves playing Sparrow and will keep doing it as long as they let him. So, guess he just enjoys it.

I just read somewhere that Johnny Depp has made $350 million from the "Pirates" franchise alone -eek-

EDIT: OK, I see that has been posted already, ignore.

Considering how much Disney has been banking on everything Pirates, I think Depp should hold out for more cash before signing for a 5th entry.
