Many places still have matinee pricing (usually only $1-2 off, which is like, 10% of the regular price, but still), and Regal has Discount Tuesdays chainwide. And yes, some new releases have a surcharge for the first few weeks now.

Good point! IIRC, didn't the original MoviePass (or maybe Sinemia, remember them?) include some restriction on changing the account logged into your device every 30 days or something? So, if you had 2 accounts, you had to bring two devices to the theater.

Re: MoviePass... would it work for you? [UPDATE: THE DEAD SHALL RISE]

I guess this was stuff that happened back when it was $9.99 a month. Who knows if it will affect their comeback.

SEC sues MoviePass executives for lying about its completely unsustainable business model

The US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has sued three executives involved with MoviePass, alleging they lied repeatedly about whether their subscription service could become profitable.

Former MoviePass CEO J. Mitchell Lowe and Theodore Farnsworth — former CEO of majority stakeholder Helios and Matheson Analytics Inc. — allegedly made false claims to the public and in regulatory filings, attempting to conceal the subscription theater ticket service’s dire economic prospects. That included falsely claiming that heavy users had tripped security flags or been randomly selected for extra measures to stop them from using MoviePass, when in reality, these users were simply putting stress on an unsustainable business model.

“Faced with debilitating negative cash flows — rather than tell the public the truth — Farnsworth and Lowe devised fraudulent tactics to prevent MoviePass’s heavy users from using the service, and falsely and misleadingly informed the public that usage had declined naturally,” says the complaint, which was filed on Monday in a New York court.

Oh my that's a NEW development??

Maybe they got wind of them wanting to restart so they decided to make sure they were on the up and up.
Maybe this thread will be entered into evidence at the trail.

I’m more surprised that the new (original) owner wants to revive the MoviePass name, rather than rebrand it completely. The brand definitely has a negative connotation now.

Might as well bring back The Weinstein Company while they’re at it!

I could understand the need to rebrand. Eventually (in this connected world) the word will get out as to who it really is.

Re: MoviePass... would it work for you? [UPDATE: THE DEAD SHALL RISE]

You guys are aware of the history of MoviePass, correct? After reading the last few posts, I am not sure ... (using Wikipedia and a few other sites to make sure my info is not clouded by my addled brain)

MoviePass was created by a couple of guys (a film executive and a "serial investor") as a tech start-up. Originally it debuted at $50/month in San Francisco as a test market. It then launched in multiple metropolitan markets and dropped to a variable pricing structure of $25 - $40 depending on the market. They then brought in Mitch Lowe as CEO (I did not realize this, I thought Mitch came from the Helios & Matheson buyout) and Mitch began tinkering with pricing and restrictions. The next year, Helios and Matheson (a data analytics company) bought a majority stake in the company and the original founders were no longer part of the company. This was the launch of the $9.99 price point and the ensuing antics.

What most of us know about (and experienced with) MoviePass was under this Helios and Matheson regime, led by Mitch Lowe and Ted Farnsworth (CEO of Helios and Matheson). This was where the antics and shenanigans occurred, not under the founders. The FTC case against Mitch Lowe and Ted Farnsworth (the Helios and Matheson regime) was settled in 2021 (unless there is some new development -- citation please?). EDIT: The above mention is a new SEC case* against Mitch, Ted, and another executive (Kalid Itum) as individuals, not against H&M or MoviePass.

Earlier this year, one of the original founders, Stacy Spikes, reacquired rights to the name and company (what little of it was left) and is re-launching. Spikes was not part of the crazy years.

*The SEC is seeking forfeiture of everything the three made from their illegal actions involving MoviePass as well as "permanently prohibiting Farnsworth and Lowe from serving as an officer or director of any company" which issues securities or is required to file reports under certain sections of the law AND "permanently enjoining Farnsworth and Lowe from directly or indirectly promoting any issuer of any security, causing the promotion of any issuer of any security, or deriving compensation from the promotion of any issuer of any security".

Re: MoviePass... would it work for you? [UPDATE: THE DEAD SHALL RISE]

The new Moviepass is a new venture with no tie to the old one, except for the name and the idea (with one of the original co-founders, not one of the ones being sued). This SEC lawsuit wouldn't affect its launch except in the way that really bad PR would affect a starting business.

That said, what will affect it is that their much publicized Labor Day "launch" has been a dud of messaging and confusion. It's a month later and I still don't think it's actually launched, even to small audiences in the test cities. They haven't even tweeted out a single thing in three weeks. The smallest, cheapest, easiest thing you could do to keep some kind of momentum going - and they can't even do that.

I am mildly interested in the new service to see if it can fill some existing gaps in my A-List subscription, but with each passing week of nothing, that interest dims.

These long explanations are the reason why they need to rebrand

But thanks for providing more details.

I don't disagree with that. I may have worked in PR for a few decades, but I don't claim to understand it. I would tell you the brand is too tarnished ... buy the scraps, mine the pieces, and change the name to build your new product.

Re: MoviePass... would it work for you? [UPDATE: THE DEAD SHALL RISE]

I looked at the website and looks like they are still in beta and launched in Florida this week. They posted on their Twitter last week.

It must be a super slow test roll out.

Ankle monitors tend to slow you down.

Re: MoviePass... would it work for you? [UPDATE: THE DEAD SHALL RISE]

I signed up for 3 movies at $10 a month.

looks like there is a point system now too.
The faq says previous movie passers get extra points but I didn’t see anything to indicate I have extra points yet.

Edit: It is 1-3 movies a month and you use the points. Some movies are 15 points and some are 10. I have 34 and they roll over.

Re: MoviePass... would it work for you? [UPDATE: THE DEAD SHALL RISE]

I got the invite today (good for 7 days it says). I'm actually thinking about giving it a go again too. Still seems sketchy though, the website is pretty poor, and not much in the way of details.

Neither the app or the website explain how it works now.

Do the $10 one. It doesn’t start until the card is activated and you can cancel and change the plan every month.

I also got the invite. I need more information. Is it once again a debit card with a set spending limit? What chain is actually supporting this? Can you use it online?

Re: MoviePass... would it work for you? [UPDATE: THE DEAD SHALL RISE]

The $10 what one?

It doesn’t show you any details on any plans, where it can be used, NOTHING. All it does is prompt you to set up an account or … BUY MY NEW BOOK as I break my silence about what really happened at MoviePass!

They are certainly working hard to keep this as sketchy as it was under the old regime.

Thinking I’m going to (Movie)pass since they can’t provide basic details and hit us with an immediate and upfront shill for the CEO’s book. Hard (Movie)pass unless something changes in the next seven days.

Looks like it is all available on their website. Pretty bad marketing and PR with that first e-mail.

Plans: https://www.moviepass.com/pricing
