I have no need. I only have AMCs near and A-List is great.

Same here. A-List is great. I have no need to re-visit this. I live 10 minutes from an AMC. Even if I change, it would likely be Regal Unlimited as I live near 2 Regals.

My nearest theater in an AMC, but I will drive twice as far to go somewhere else. It sucks, and their concessions are much higher than everywhere else. I was a member of MoviePass in its original incarnation at 30 bucks a month, and enjoyed the service. I could be persuaded to try it again, depending on pricing and what they actually offer.

I've said this before, but I'd be happy with A-list if my local AMCs were open past 8 during the week. They're not, so A-list is not an option for me. I look forward to seeing the new MP pricing, but I'm not holding my breath for any kind of deal.

Yeah, spending the money to buy back the brand is an interesting move, and I still don't get how they're going to compete in this space without some kind of deal with some of the theater chains (assuming it's going to work somewhat the same).

Re: MoviePass... would it work for you? [UPDATE: THE DEAD SHALL RISE]

Hello!

We are so excited to announce that we are beginning our launch sequence to bring MoviePass back. For those of you who don’t know MoviePass was sold back in 2017 to a private equity group and due to mismanagement subsequently closed its doors. Last year I, one of the original Founders, bought the company back with the plan to relaunch it. Time Magazine did a great piece that does a wonderful job of explaining the sequence of events that lead to this point.

I want to thank everyone for their support in helping us get here. So many of you have called, emailed and even stopped me on the street to show that you still had your original MoviePass card and talk about how much you loved the service. So if you were a 2012 OG or caught the wave towards the end we look forward to welcoming you back.

We will begin relaunching the service beginning Labor Day - September 5th. But prior to that we are opening up our waitlist to be able to join.

Being on the waitlist will be the only way to be able to sign up for the service in the foreseeable future. This Thursday, August 25, 2022 we will open the waitlist at 9a ET at MoviePass.com There is no cost to join the waitlist. Space will be limited and on a first come first serve basis. The engagement from the waitlist will help us to determine which markets we will open first and thereafter.

Each person who joins the waitlist will receive 10 friend invites that will activate when they sign up for the service. If you do not make it on the waitlist the only way you will be able to join in the future is to receive an invite from someone.

We are very excited to get back up and running and look forward to seeing you all at the movies soon.

Sincerely,

Stacy Spikes
Co-Founder/CEO

Re: MoviePass... would it work for you? [UPDATE: THE DEAD SHALL RISE]

I mean, for free I'll join the waitlist (if I can) and it makes sense for them to make it some viral thing, but I don't have high hopes that this will be feasible in my area. I mean what has changed, besides the big chains having their own programs now and are even less likely to enter into any agreements with a third party company? Maybe for smaller chains or something? They won't even say what regions they'll open in let alone what the prices (or program) will be, unless I'm missing something.

The AMC/Regal plans are also much cheaper than pre-insane-era moviepass ever was.

Re: MoviePass... would it work for you? [UPDATE: THE DEAD SHALL RISE]

So I missed the original articles around the investor panel in February but there are a few concerns:

https://www.reviewgeek.com/109613/mo...nightmare/amp/

The crypto connection sounds a little far fetched but it is virtual currency and a major way to get "more" of it is to watch ads with eye tracking and presumably location tracking. Also they say it will not be unlimited at all but will be basically "we give you credits and you can buy tickets and stuff" which... I mean where is the money coming from? It can't be just an equivalent exchange, the user has to get more out of it than they're paying but then where are they getting profit, are they selling your data, do they have deals with certain theaters, or what?

Hard pass. I’m perfectly happy with A-List. I don’t trust this will be a successful. Even though late summer this year has been horrendously slow for big new movies, I still get my money’s worth on A-List seeing at least 2 to 3 movies per month.

I don't even know if I got an email. Maybe it was in my spam folder. The app for Alamo Drafthouse spoiled me.

TBH, I will look at what's going on with prices vs benefits. I have enough time to do damage to a subscription service.

I'll check it out. During it's prime, it couldn't be beat. So much better than the AMC thing we have now. It worked at all of my local theaters. Sucks that towards the end, there were so many assholes that were purposely scamming the company to cost them money.

Even without the scamming, it was unsustainable, they were basically just using investor money to heavily subsidize full price tickets.

But the scamming was so epic. I'm sure it's catalogued earlier in this thread but people were "buying" tickets just to get parking validation and not seeing the movie.

Got the email last night. Hoping to find out the details without going on the Wait List.

Cool, cool. Send out an email saying there's going to be a "wait list" without giving any actual details.

I'll stick with A-list. Love them or hate them (MoviePass) they were the catalyst for movie theaters to start their own movie clubs.

As much as I really liked MoviePass for the price, I loved the Alamo Drafthouse app for convenience. Just walk into the theater and go straight to your seat. Like a boss.

We have an Alamo Drafthouse in DTLA but I have never been. A friend who has says it's a pain in the ass when you order food and drinks because the staff has to walk through the aisle to bring you your stuff, even when the film is playing. If that's the case, I'd still to iPic for stuff like that. At iPic the seats only come in pairs and the waitstaff bring you your food and drink over to the side and tables and never have to walk through your aisle. It's way more efficient, IMO.

At my Drafthouse there was an aisle in front of the seats for the servers. And they usually would duck so not to be obtrusive. And seats were in pairs, too. Plus they didn't put up with cell phones and talking during the movie. They give a stern message before the movie.

I’ve seen a dozen movies at our Drafthouse and the servers moving through the aisles duck down and move fast. I’ll take that over talkers, babies and cell phone users any day.

I honestly never noticed them once the movie starts. And I was there at least once a week when their subscription service started. I was a good tipper. One server, Jen, would write a nice "thank you" note on the order receipt. I wish I had given her a shoutout on their Facebook page before they closed.

Yeah. It was ultimately unsustainable, but it lasted a good while. Would have lasted longer except for the scamming assholes. I think there was even a scumbag that posted here that bragged about how he would scam movie pass consistently for some perceived sleight at some point. Guy was an idiot.

Re: MoviePass... would it work for you? [UPDATE: THE DEAD SHALL RISE]

The only theater chain near me with a sub is AMC which isn't really an option for me right now, so I figured I'd sign up for the new wait-list. No harm in seeing what the deal is, right? Well, maybe if I could actually sign up for the wait-list. I just keep getting an "error joining wait-list" message when I hit submit. Never change movie pass, never change.

Thanks for the waitlist reminder. My old debit isn't valid anymore so they couldn't "accidentally" charge it if they tried.
