NEW YORK—Admitting that this week’s devastating quarterly earnings report necessitated tough decisions on the part of the company, MoviePass CEO Mitch Lowe announced plans Thursday to increase profitability by no longer mailing out $500 checks to subscribers every month. “While this decision is sure to be unpopular with users, our internal projections show that not sending them $500 every 30 days will result in annual savings of almost $6,000 per subscriber,” said Lowe, noting that MoviePass’ financial situation was such that sending users as little as $300 per month may not be a sustainable business practice. “It’s tough because this was a cornerstone of our business model and also because people really loved those free checks. But we just can’t seem to turn a profit when the subscription fee we charge is only 99 cents. We thought maybe if we cut out the movie-viewing part entirely and made it a money mailing service it might work, but that didn’t really improve our operating costs.” Lowe assured wary investors that MoviePass would continue to offer 72 months of free service for new subscribers.

"You know, I wish they had cut it down to just $300 a month instead of doing away with it completely. That's a much more sustainable model and would have kept them in business longer."

3 movies per month, that's still a good deal for 9.99. If that truly is sustainable for them I wish they would have gone right to that, I would have stayed. But all that horseshit with the disappearing movies and disappearing times makes it worthless. No way am I going to make two trips. Plus when I'm traveling which was my original motivation for getting it would have been rendered obsolete. I don't have the opportunity at all to be heading over to pre-purchase a movie ticket.

Mitch and Ted must have smoked some really potent shit before that interview I posted if they think this ship is turning around.

Anyone get the newest email detailing which movies will be available? All shit! What a useless program now. I wouldn't mind the limit to 3 movies a month if ALL movies at ALL times were available excluding premium formats. But there isn't one movie on the upcoming list I want to see.

Blind Item for MP is that they are secretly working with studios now to help boost certain movies box office number up by making only those movies available. The item says the big box office for Meg was a direct result of this.

You could get tickets to see The Meg last weekend? I only saw Slenderman and that didn't help its box office much.

Slenderman and The Meg were the only 2 movies available in my area all weekend.
Here is the blind. As always take with many grains of salt.
This barely hanging on company conspired with a studio to make sure a movie was number one this past week. Apparently that is how it is going to make its money from now on. Moviepass ("The Meg")

Here is the email I got.
To our members:
Today we are rolling out our new subscription plan that was announced last week. We believe this new model provides great value to the MoviePass community and, equally important, ensures that we can continue to provide these benefits for you to enjoy into the future.
As we transition to the new subscription plan, we want to share more details about our service moving forward as part of our commitment to keep you fully informed. For the time being, we will be limiting the films and showtimes that are available to members each day. During this transition period, MoviePass will offer up to six films to choose from daily, including a selection of major studio first-run films and independent releases. In addition, showtime availability may be limited depending on the popularity of those films on the app that particular day.
While the films and showtimes available in the app will change daily, the schedule of available film selections will be published at least a week in advance on the MoviePass website so members can plan ahead for the films they want to see. Click here to see the current schedule. Please note that e-ticketing will continue to include ALL movies and showtimes with no restrictions. Because actual availability will change daily, we encourage our members to always check the MoviePass app before leaving for the theater.
As we celebrate the one-year anniversary of our $9.95 subscription offering, we want to thank you -- our millions of members -- for your loyalty and for your continued support. We’ll have some exciting updates on additional features and service offerings -- that will bring greater value to you as a member -- in the near future.

Just got it too.
I can currently see Black Klansman and the Meg. None of the other films on their Non-Verboten list are playing anywhere near me.
The nearest eticketing theatre for me is like 1000 miles.
I used to occasionally buy a ticket during lunch, for a night time show, just to avoid lines and if I was near the theatre. But not because I had to.
If you cancel, can you still [try to] use your membership during the remaining term? I want to make damn sure I don't get rebilled in Nov for a 12 month period. If MP lasts till this November, that is.
It's my fault - I apologize. I was an early-ish adopter for a product I liked. That's a curse, though this one took a little bit longer. Previous victims: Sega 32x. HD-DVD. First editions of board or video games that are discovered to either suck, or have a better edition planned for the near future. I'll add MP to the list. Although usually the management of the company tries to make the product succeed, instead of having a six month old baby scribble their business plan.
Their website now says "The Future of Moviegoing". If this is true, Hollywood is doomed.

Also, I said it before, but if ticket verification isn't enabled anymore, I'm sure people are just going to check in to whatever and then going to buy tickets to blockbusters (and yes I realize this is a breach of the TOS).

Interview with Ted and Mitch today on FOX Business. They seem to think that things are going okay. They claim they have reduced cash burn to about 12M per month. They still say that they have over 3M subscribers.

Full page ad in this morning's paper celebrating 1 year at $9.95. Fortunately they don't use the tag line "any movie, any time, any theater" any more. Just a promo for a contest to go to Los Angeles.
Supposed to be a rainy day so instead of the golf course later this afternoon, I think I'll hit the movies for MI5. But since it's an early show it'll be like $6.

MP bug - don’t know if this has been discovered by others and posted on reddit or anyhjng, but it’s something I tried today that worked! I hope it won't get me booted. I noticed at midnight last night that pretty much all theaters listed all movies for the following day. I checked again this morning. I wanted to see Alpha today but it wasn't one of the selected titles. So I opened the page to the theater I wanted to see it at this morning, and just left it like that, didn't close out the app. I checked back a few times throughout the day, careful to not go back a page or anything like that. Times were still listed, with only times that had passed disappearing on the screen. I checked into the movie I wanted to see, bought my ticket, and did the ticket verification. Voila! YMMV!

Man, the service sucks now. I really want to ask Costco for my money back, but I'd feel bad because it's not their fault. Still trying to decide about that. I haven't been able to use the MP service for a movie I want to see at a time I want to see it in like a month (last one was Mamma Mia 2 and that was at least 4 weeks ago, probably more). I wish they would have gone under -- then I would just get a refund from Costco without even asking them. This gimped service is somehow actually worse that bankruptcy.

Was thinking about using it to see Mile 22 today just to have those assholes pay for it before I'm officially out next Thursday. It's on their approved list today. But, they're being selective with the times. The theater closest to me only has 2 times available on their app.

Has there ever been a product that has changed their TOS so many times in such a short period of time?

Updated the app a day or two ago.
Went and saw Christopher Robin tonight... and the app asked me to take a photo of my ticket.
Thought they weren’t making us do that anymore?

Have you renewed after the 15th yet? If not, technically you're not on the new terms, and would still be required to take photos.
Not that I would put it past them to fuck something like this up, mind you.
