American Express is BRUTAL when it comes to defending their cardholders against shady vendors who engage in this level of horseshit. I invite MP to try to charge me on August 22nd for another month.

If MP even thinks of fraudulently charging cardholders, and the majority of the cardholders initiate chargebacks and fraud investigations, they may find themselves in a position where they can only accept PayPal or Venmo, if even those.

It's not only that, their business basically runs through a debit card via MasterCard, if they lose that what do they have left?

My wife and I dont have ticket validation with our Movie Passes. We can check into Slenderman and then buy tickets for what ever we want to see instead.

I'm just pissed MP no longer has listings for the art house theater by my house. I want to see Black Klansmen but will need to go to a theater thats further away that is also playing Mission Impossible or Spy Who Dumped Me.

When they sent that e-mail to watch MI: Fallout on Tuesday, they weren't kidding. That's literally the only movie available at this point today.

This is unintentional comedy at this point.

re: MoviePass... would it work for you? [UPDATE: THE DEAD SHALL RISE]

Before MoviePass, from time to time I would use a service called DealFlicks at my art house theatre. It seems they are going under due to financial reasons. Look at the difference in the way the handle it.

We are sad to let you know that Dealflicks is stopping our service effective immediately. This is unfortunate news for us to share as we have spent countless hours and effort over the past six years trying provide the best movie ticket deals to users across the US. However, at this time, we are unable to continue to operate moving forward based on our financial situation.

We appreciate your support and patronage over the years, and we hope that our original vision of the industry will somehow continue to move forward in our absense.

If you have any outstanding paid Dealbucks that is connected with your Dealflicks user account, please fill out this form to file a claim:

We will be taking in all gift card claims for the next 30 days until 11:59pm EST on Friday September 14, 2018, and we will issue any payouts shortly thereafter once all claims have been received.

If you have any other questions, please email us at [email protected]. Please keep in mind that aspects of our website/app/FB page will be out-of-date as of now until we are able to properly update/disable the various features.

Thank you so much,

-Team Dealflicks

Went to my local theater, paid for the MoviePass ticket for MI:Fallout. Received my free small popcorn (which they give to rewards members on Tuesday). Went in and watched the opening scenes and then left. I had already seen the film before and I plan to milk everything I can out of MP!

cancelled today. Got to see a couple good movies I wouldn't have gone to see but overall not really worth it. Especially once the good weather hits, I'd rather be golfing or swimming than in a movie theater.

I cancelled again today after they renewed my membership after I cancelled. I deleted the app and deleted it off the cloud too. I'm done with them. I'm their perfect user, I only use the app 1-2 times a month (mainly once a month), but I haven't been able to see a movie using it when I wanted to the last couple months....

I was really looking forward to *finally* seeing M:I tonight after work, however when I checked the app at 5 pm the only supported showtime was 10:50 pm. Screw that. Maybe tomorrow.

Tomorrow it'll be a different movie you don't want to see.

Actually, tomorrow is the first day of the new terms, so I'll be curious what they do.

In a strange parallel Mitch Lowe's brother Mark Lowe, is closing down his long-time local favorite Video Store/Chain, Video Droid.

It's served the community for 34 years and I'm a bit sad to see it go.

Planned to see MI with my wife tonight (we streamed Rogue Nation last night and enjoyed it), but by 6pm the local theaters were all showing nothing available.

re: MoviePass... would it work for you? [UPDATE: THE DEAD SHALL RISE]

https://www.businessinsider.com/heli...-report-2018-8

"Without additional funding, the company will not have sufficient funds to meet its obligations within one year from [Tuesday]," the company said in its quarterly report. "These factors raise substantial doubt about the company's ability to continue as a going concern."

As of Friday, Helios and Matheson had just $26 million in cash on hand. It had another $25.4 million on deposit at its merchant bank, which processes payments on its behalf.

By contrast, the company burned through more than $219 million in the first six months of the year — $150.8 million of that in the second quarter alone. The company burned cash in the second quarter at a rate of about $50.3 million a month — an amount nearly equal to all of the company's cash and accounts receivable on Friday.
It's amazing that in this state they still say they "might" not be able to keep going for another year. The article does say all the changes are supposed to reduce cash burn by 60%, and BI estimates that at that rate they could last until November. Also somehow they had 3.2 million subscribers on Saturday (I wonder how many of the automatic non cancellations they counted.. probably all of them).

re: MoviePass... would it work for you? [UPDATE: THE DEAD SHALL RISE]

So they updated the website and this limited showings thing is not going away with the new plan.

Enjoy 3 Movies per Month, it's on us.
9.95month
GET STARTED
See both blockbuster and independent films
Choose from up to 6 films daily
Buy additional tickets with discounts of up to $5*
Watch at 91% of movie theaters in the US
Get invites to special events & screenings
Choose from up to 6 films daily. So maybe one, maybe six, probably closer to one though.

But they have enough money to have a sweepstakes for their one year anniversary!

Maybe the prize is stock? Or the spare change in someone's pocket?

So what "up to six" movies are available today?

The more I think about it, the more shady it seems that they took back all those cancellations conveniently when they had a stockholder meeting yesterday where they wanted to tout how many subscribers they still had. And now they're being sued by stockholders (I think the class action thing) for misrepresenting the viability of their business.

edited to add: seems like the selection is:
The Meg
Crazy Rich Asians

Wow, that's pathetic.

Sweepstakes are generally cheap to run and can potentially bring in some (much needed) positive publicity. They need more stuff like that, IMO, considering word-of-mouth has gone to the gutters at this point.

You were joking, but you're right! No M:I listed today for me. So that was a one day opportunity? Man, this stupid company. My only option today is Crazy Rich Asians, which I wouldn't mind seeing. But I really wanted M:I.

The rep/2nd run theater around me has been showing James Bond movies on Wednesdays this month. Tonight's - Live and Let Die - is not listed in the app. First time that's happened there. Guess I'll be paying the $5 out of pocket.

This pre-selected movies nonsense ain't convincing me to keep my subscription going.

re: MoviePass... would it work for you? [UPDATE: THE DEAD SHALL RISE]

https://www.cnbc.com/2018/08/15/movi...d-quarter.html

MoviePass' parent company, Helios and Matheson Analytics, lost $100 million in the second quarter, according to its most recent quarterly report filed late Tuesday, on pace to blow through its remaining assets in the next quarter if its new turnaround plan doesn't work out.

Helios and Matheson posted a gross loss of $104.6 million, a drastic swing from the year-ago period when it reported a gross profit of $223,000. The company has just $175.3 million of total assets left on hand, including $15.5 million in cash.

Shares of Helios and Matheson opened roughly 30 percent lower Wednesday. But the stock trades for just a few cents, so it doesn't take much to send it on massive swings.

The popular movie subscription service has been facing public scrutiny and changing its offerings in an effort to reach profitability. Last week, MoviePass cut its standard plan to just three movies per month, down from one movie per day. It also experimented with peak pricing, limited showings and ticket verification — all to reduce abuse of the service.

Helios and Matheson doesn't break out specific revenue for MoviePass, but said the decline in quarterly profit is "primarily due to operating expenses of MoviePass."

MoviePass is contributing tens of millions in additional revenue for the Helios and Matheson — it's just burning cash at a much faster rate. Total operating expenses for Helios and Matheson increased by 1,000 percent year over year during the second quarter, pushing total losses from operations past $126 million.

If it’s a couple movies a day with no other shenanigans, I’m still in. But at this point we obviously have to assume they’ll keep pulling shady changes like only giving you a few hours in the morning to get your tickets for later shows.

They’ll fold in the next quarter or two. They’re being sued and keep changing the rules on how it works. Not exactly good practices of a publicly traded company.

If they're not requiring ticket verification anymore, there's really nothing stopping you from checking in to what they let you check into, and then buying tickets for whatever you want.
